Yeah the classic Air Raid was about scoring more and zagging when everyone else was zigging. Now that teams are ready for spread, up-tempo, etc, there is a ton of value in controlling the clock. I don't think that necessarily means doing an Army and running it every play but I do think that keeping the defense off balance includes slowing it down and maybe doing a huddle.
I don't know that THIS defense has tired legs. I think they are just small and weak compared to what they need to be. When Morris was talking about "we are not strong enough, not big enough" he was talking about the defense (and a little bit of the offensive line). It is absolutely imperative that we get three or four very good defensive lineman for next year or it will be more of the same.
That is a fantastic question.

Morris will earn a base salary of $900,000 per year, plus guaranteed incentives, including a $300,000 annual radio/television stipend.
Defense used to be our calling card and our offense was compared to a Buick. Now, we got the offense most want, Leach-like and high powered, but our defense is terrible.
I would love to have our vaunted defense back and sacrifice a little offense. It is demoralizing to watch our defense play out of position, miss tackles, take bad angles, etc. week after week. This all falls on coaching. We recruit better now than we did then yet we do nothing with these young men. Example, Eod Brown was a handful for Army to handle when moved off the nose and into a four man front. What do we do? Go right back to the 3-3-5 failure because that is the defense that gave Morris the most fits. Don’t tell me we aren’t capable of recruiting on the same level as Tulane, Memphis, etc. We have everything they have to offer and more. Time to get away from the no defense/air raid offense.
