DENTON, Texas (3/19/08) – Sophomore Rebecca Waters hit a grand slam to lead the North Texas softball team to a 9-4 victory against UTSA on Wednesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green (13-16) has won four out of its last five games and extends its home record to 7-4. North Texas avenges a 9-0 loss to the Roadrunners (12-12) in the teams’ first meeting in 2005.

Waters’ grand slam capped a seven-run second inning for the Mean Green. North Texas recorded five hits in the inning, including two by Kadie Platt, but were also aided by three Roadrunners’ errors. Waters has hit four home runs in the last five games.

North Texas took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Mean Green posted just one hit but was helped again by two UTSA errors. The Roadrunners tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning, but North Texas took control in the big second inning.

Freshman Mallory Cantler continued her hot hitting with a two-RBI single in the second inning for the Mean Green. Kristina Fowler walked and Sarah Jones singled to load the bases for Waters.

Cantler leads the team with 34 hits and a .362 batting average. Waters is third on the team in batting average (.327) and tied for second in home runs (4)

Jennifer Smith picked up her fifth win of the season with a seven-inning, seven hit performance. She allowed just two earned runs, while striking out five batters.

Each team posted seven hits, but UTSA was hurt by five errors.

North Texas returns to action on Friday, March 21 when it begins a three-game series against conference opponent Florida Atlantic. The doubleheader on Friday starts at 2 pm.
