When I'm an old old man, and we finally get around to building a new stadium, I wonder if some of the "new" aluminum bleachers could be reassembled and moved to the new stadium ? Otherwise, what would we do with them ? I guess we could take them to Fulton's and sell them by the pound.

And speaking of recycling, how about tearing down the "alumni" side of Fouts and leaving the track and the "student" side of the stadium as a track and field venue ? We don't have one otherwise. Maybe even cover it for indoor track.

I believe the plan for Fouts is more parking and academic buildings. A track is in the Master Plan for the Eagle Point area, but I'm thinking Fouts will be around for some time after the new stadium is built in order to provide a track venue.

The master plan calls for a new track facility to be built at the south end of Eagle Point, near Willowwood St. There was talk (and I believe that it is in the agenda) to relocate the current track at Fouts to the new location. I don't believe that the bleachers can be moved because they are predominately curved.

All of the area is to be used for parking as I understand it. The space will be needed for gameday (and other) parking. A pedestrian bridge must be built over I-35 to access the new stadium. There are precious few places to park on Eagle Point campus. Original plans called for a parking garage to be built on the Newton Rayzor property (roughly corner of Bonnie Brae and Airport Road) but that would be costly and inadequate. Still, it would also provide parking for the new baseball stadium (when built) so it should be utilized in some way, whether surface parking or a multi-level garage.

---The metal parts will be sold to someone (maybe a smaller college or high school)... The stadium that Odessa used until the current concrete one was built was sold, torn down, and reassembled somewhere near Austin.

Midland tore down 1/2 of their old stadium (metal) and sold it to someone a couple of years ago. The other half is still there and used for track meets, junior high games, and other events.

Curved or not, someone will have a use for a lot of it. Are those benches really curved or are they a lot of straight benches assembled to look curved? There is no way they would be moved intact... they would torn down and reassembled.. maybe not even appearing the same ( curved ). after all "tinker toys and legos" can be put together many ways.

It would not surprise me to see the same happen to Fouts unless they need the land for more academic buildings. I would take down the student side... and leave the side with the pressbox unless the highway wants part of the land there. That would also give more land back to campus side if needed.

I've always wondered if parts or a portion of the aluminum bleachers at Fouts could be taken apart and reconfigured somehow at Eagle Point for a baseball venue. Add a veneer, concessions, bathrooms, dug-outs, etc.

Beat me to it. That's exactly what they SHOULD be used for and there's no reason I can think of that say's otherwise.

I was told we were not going to use any of the existing seating at Fouts in the new stadium, that is was more costly with labor to move it than buy new. I do not know what type bench seating they are planning to use but I do like the seatback type like Smut uses.

Old Odessa Stadium is now Leander's Stadium.

The cost of labor to unbolt and transport to sight(across the highway) higher than the cost of aluminum and transporting it from the manufacturer to the site?

I'd love to know who told you that, no wait, I don't want to know.

Maybe the engineers/architects will offer alternatives? I also wondered about using the defunct Texas Stadium seats. Can navy blue plastic be painted Green?

I believe it was Leander, Texas in the Hill Country just north and west of Austin. My old stomping grounds.

Doh! Buff beat me to it.

I'm not sure I like the idea, but how about replacing the old blue plastic from the Texas Stadium seats with new green (mean green) plastic ?

Whenever a government enity is involved, the cost will always go up. Private business is more likely to try to "recycle" the old bleachers. Government will tell us that it's cheaper to just replace with new.

And by the way, there is nothing curved about the aluminum bleachers at Fouts. They are straight pieces laid out at an angle, to present a gentle curve.

Consider if the cost of labor, transportation, etc. to remove one bleacher is more than simply the cost of one new bleacher. I think it would be. Figure about 4 guys per bench and about 2 hours to unbolt it, move it to an assembly area, and load it on a truck. Conservatively figure 8 man-hours per bench, 10 if they're union workers. That's about $120-150 per bench just for labor, and not including transportation. Figure $50 per bench for total transportation costs. Now you're talking about getting very close to the price of a new bench with back rests.

While it often seems on the surface that reusing materials would be cheaper, it doesn't usually pan out.

I'll have to look and get back with you on it. But I'm almost certain you and I and a portable, pneumatic wrench could dismantle a very large portion

of of the bleachers quicker than expected.

By the way, here's an idea of how much alumninum bleacher systems are running now days.

That's a 15 row by 30 foot set, cost is $21,129.

Sorry Mag, seems to me it cost the Leander School district , less than $50,000 to purchase the stadium . Do you recall ?

Rick, for that 15 row by 30 foot set, it costs $1,168.95 to ship it to a construction site, so let's revise your price to $22,297.95.

If we're going to do metal bleachers ... why not spend a little more and get bleacher-chairs?

I wish we'd get away from the idea of "recycling" parts of Fouts for something else in the Athletic Department. The only real part that I see as viable of being moved to the new site is the scoreboard. Even then, I'd totally go for a new bigger scoreboard and some other scoreboards throughout the stadium (to display some stats ... like rushing, passing, and total yards). I know they're expensive, but it be cool to have those long LED boards like you see at the AAC (OU has the same thing at their stadium).

The idea just seems cheap to me is all. Everything we build from this point forward should be new (baseball stadium included). The old LCS complex is the only thing that we should refurbish for our use going forward.

We should either sale, donate, or discard the end-zone aluminum stands.

Well I believe one of the plans calls for a new Scoreboard that will be bigger and also allow more advertisement on the back of it at the 35E/35W intersection.

Finally the ridiculous circular curviture of Fouts Field can pay some dividends.

The aluminum stands need to be removed. That may be to build a baseball facility, a track facility, sold to another school, or simply sold as scrap.

The west stands will need to be demolished. The structure is too close to the I-35 expansion and the west stands already have a history of foundation problems and repairs.

That leaves the structuraly stable east stands (student side) of Fouts.

This section of Fouts can be retained and have a outdoor performance venue built on what's now the football field. something similar to the facility at Fair Park but much larger. The curved sideline facilities at Fouts provide an excellent structure to expand into an amphitheature. This will allow one of the largest universities in the nation to attract some premier musical performers. In addition to providing a needed venue, this would also free the majority of the current stadium facility to be converted to parking for classes, performances, special events, and sporting events.

Or, blind stupidy can rein and the whole thing can be bulldozed for a parking lot.

Why not try to build the first Eco-friendly stadium, since we are the Mean Green. This would gets tons of media attention and I would be willing to bet that a large corporation would jump at chance to become the major donor. Corporations love to look good in the public eye and since technology is starting to become more green, what better way to show their support publically than by having our stadium named after them. It would also make UNT look good.

Just bring in a heavy duty industrial chopper and haul the north endzone stands acroos I-35. With a few adjustments, perfect for the behind the plate seats at the new baseball stadium. Scrap the south endzone seats and sell 'em to China.

Actually, a set of those endzone seats would make perfect baseball stands, and perfect size = 5,000 seats. Someone email RV. You could almost picture it without the rest of Fouts....

I like that idea. With the strides a lot of our development has been making with the green buildings and the essc. The environmental science program at UNT is a great program, and the reasoning behind our school colors being green - it only makes sense.
