Let's turn back the clock...

I found this article on RV from April 4, 2001, the announcement of Dr. Pohl's selection as new Athletic Director. Hard to believe that in seven years (in three weeks that is), all that has changed with regards to North Texas Athletics. Dr. Pohl had the following to say about RV:

"His enthusiasm is contagious. He knows how to articulate a vision in a way that literally makes you want to get involved because you know the outcome will be special," said Pohl. "He will reach out to our alumni and students alike. He understands the economic development aspects of athletic events and will work cooperatively to build loyalty in the local community. He is right for North Texas."
RV has been quoted saying:

"My goal is to be at the top of the Sun Belt Conference in everything we do," Villarreal said. "The location of the school, the quality of student athletes in the metroplex and throughout the state of Texas, and the large number of alumni in the area are among the reasons for our potential for success."

Then reading the most recent information (as of last year) from the North Texas Athletics website (aka. MeanGreenSports.com) we see the following:

Since coming to North Texas, Villarreal has led the Mean Green to a premiere position in the Sun Belt Conference. There have been 12 conference championships in his short tenure and North Texas has finished among the top three in the Sun Belt Conference all-sports championship standings four out of six years.

Villarreal has overseen the development of facilities that compare favorably to the elite collegiate athletic programs in the nation. He organized the building of an $8 million athletic facility that houses a state-of-the-art training suite as well as administration and football offices to go along with brand new locker rooms. He also facilitated the acquisition of a former local high school campus that has undergone renovations and now provides new venues for basketball (practice), soccer, softball and volleyball. As part of a joint strategic plan with the University, Villarreal was also instrumental in the design and construction of a $3 million tennis facility.

And for you closet "Sexy Time" freaks out there...

It's hard to believe all that's changed during his tenure, and I can't wait to see what the future brings ( :cough: a new stadium :cough: ). Keep up the great work RV, and here's to all you've done and plan to do for North Texas Athletics.

The real tragedy is the basketball team was only three wins away from the triumphant GMG late night return of RV from the mountain top. Sadly, the seniors will have to carry that the rest of their lives...

So lets see, we've raised 6 million dollars in seven years, at this rate we should be able to bond the stadium out in... let me get my slide rule out... 2024?

..an Engineer from UNT would still be using a slide rule.:o
