I was thinking about how all the Mean Green fans always want big OL/DL players.

I would say the team has about 18 players that should be at or close to 300lbs by

the fall season. So here is the current players that should make the 300lb club.

1. OG Esteban Santiago, 6-5, 302, in the 300lb club

2. Center, Kelvin Drake, 6-2, 300, in the 300lb club

3. OL Jacob Kaiser, 6-7, 295-- just 5lbs away

4. OG Tyler Bailey, 6-2, 295-- just 5lbs away

5. OL Chad Rose, 6-3, 285

6. Center/OL J.J. Johnson, 6-2, 280

7. OT Matthew Menard, 6-5, 280-- Menard must be around 295 by now?

8. DT Joseph Miller, 6-3, 280

9. DT Draylen Ross, 6-3, 280 (is he still with the team?)

10. OL/OT Matt Tomlinson, 6-5, 270 ? One full year in the system, should be 290 by now

11. DL/DT Jesse DeSoto, 6-2, 275 -- still growing

12. DL/DT Jordan Scoggins, 6-1, 275 -- still growing

New recruits coming in-

1. OL/OT Nate Jenkins, 6-4, 335, in the 300lb club

2. OL/OG Gabe Hollivay, 6-3, 320, in the 300lb club

3. OL/OT Troy Franklin, 6-5, 270, I have read that Troy is at 305 now.

4. DL Tevinn Cantly, 6-4, 292 -- 8lbs away

5. OL Coleman Freeley, 6-4, 285

6. Center, Nick Leppo, 6-2, 285

This team could very well end up having the largest number of OL/DL players that

hit the scales at 300lbs, that I can remember. I would say, this team will have the beef!

I'll never forget in 2002 and 2003 New Mexico State had the nations largest offensive line, average per man. At the same time, Andy Brewster, the anchor and spirit of the Mean Green's offensive line was rediculously dominating opponents with his massive 275 pounds of nastyness.

I hope they have the strength and endurance to go with it. Here's to the S&C coach ensuring that weight is muscle mass.

Was Andy even that big? I loved watching him play and would love to see him as a coach. Could you imagine the line Lefty, with Andy as an assistant, would put together?

Back to the topic, I would rather see our OL in the 290 to 300 club as long as they maintain their quickness. I think this is too heavy though, for the DL. Yes, I know, but Booger was the exception, but the 280 to 290 range for the DT's and the 260 to 280 range for DE's.

Carrying a Heavy Burden

Just a fascinating article. I saw a segment on sportscenter a while back along these same lines. This seems to be part of a larger discussion of what is an acceptable level of competition. If the only way to get ahead is to do something damaging to yourself, do we allow that in the spirit of competition, or outlaw it in the spirit of safety? I suspect we'll see a similar breakdown in the views of whether or not steriods should be illegal.

Do we

1) accept the premise that competition is competition, and anything and everything people do to get ahead should be legal?

2) accept that premise, but place constraints on what acceptable practices are (as long as you only hurt yourself, etc)?

3) deny the premise of completely free competition, ruling out damaging practices in the interest of keeping people safe?

This is the real crux of the issue. Some will say that competition diluted is not competition at all. Others will cite the responsibility of government to provide for safety when a truly free and unrestricted reality dictates otherwise (market failures, crime, natural disasters).

If all things are left as they are naturally, and allowed to mature to their logical conclusions, there are some very ugly realities in place there. If left to our own devices, competition compounded produces a no-holds-barred scenario when otherwise unthinkable actions are justified.

The question in this case is, if those actions do not directly impact others, does that make it ok?

Good Point Rick. In one on one Brewster and Booger would get it on and I will say that Brewster won his fair share if not more than Booger. Alot of times it would seem Brew was going to get beat and then he would slam the other guy. We eventually gave Brewster the nick name GRAVE DIGGER.
