Longhorns Mailbag: Next great UT running back?

AUSTIN – Here at The Mailbag, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about the running back situation at Texas, a question generated by the early departure of Jamaal Charles for the NFL.

Almost all inquiries that come in want to know who will be the next great UT back. Well, now we can tell you that even the Longhorns are asking the same questions.

Midway through spring drills, new running backs coach Major Applewhite is still in evaluation mode, and isn’t prepared to answer your questions just yet – or allow us to answer your questions.

“Right now, we’re not really worried about a depth chart with the guys,” Applewhite said. “We’re worried about the process and how to prepare and to how to play each and every day. The depth chart will sort itself out in the end.”

Applewhite said that Vondrell McGee, Chris Ogbonnaya and Fozzy Whittaker have been working with the first and second teams, and freshmen Tre Newton and Jeremy Hills are working mostly with the younger guys because they haven’t had to time to fully learn the offense.

But Applewhite said does like what he has seen so far.

“They’ve made great explosives,” he said. “We’ve had two scrimmages, and we’re taking care of the ball. We haven’t had a turnover at our position. … Each back has his strengths. We’ve got to feature what those strengths are.”

Now, to your questions …

Who will be the next running back for UT, and what are the Longhorns’ chances of beating OU next year?

–Robert L., McAllen

Hopefully we’ve already answered your first question by now – or at least as well as we can answer your question. Although, look for McGee to open some eyes. He’s a very powerful runner, but has some speed a lot of people haven’t noticed. And, remember, he did average 4.0 yards a carry last year.

As for beating OU, it might be a little early to start gendering in that direction, given that it’s still basketball season. But it will be interesting to see how the Sooners are affected defensively with all the players that declared for the NFL draft.

I agree he's got a shot to play and hope he does. But what from that article makes you think he's going to play it names every scholarship halfback Texas has on campus. It basically listed him as 4th or 5th currently and that doesn't include the best all purpose back in the nation Hales who will be on campus in August.
