Thoughts on UNT sweep

I should have mentioned this earlier in the day, but is there anyone out there who didn't think Thursday was one great night for UNT hoops in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament?

The UNT men looked like a team that could challenge for the title again. Adam McCoy showed why head coach Johnny Jones had him penciled in to start at small forward at the beginning of the season and the rest of the Mean Green played a great game against an Arkansas State team with nothing to lose.

And let's not forget that the UNT women started off the night on a solid note, drilling a New Orleans team that had beaten the Mean Green just a few days before.

The wins sent both UNT teams to Mobile for the remainder of the conference tournament on a roll, not to mention gave men's head coach Johnny Jones and his assistants a little more ammunition as they head into a few key weeks in recruiting. The whole staff was on the road Thursday scouting players, presumably trying to pick up commitments from a point guard and a post player or two.

The Super Pit also had a pretty good atmosphere for a conference tournament game with an official attendance of 4,631. It was a heck of a lot better than a few years ago when the Mean Green hosted the entire Sun Belt tournament at the Super Pit and the place seemed empty even when UNT played.

UNT's athletic department is always talking about taking that next step, no matter how big or small. Two wins in the first round of the conference tournament with nearly 5,000 fans in the stands on a Wednesday night certainly seemed to mark a milestone for UNT.

--- Adam McCoy played on last year's Midland College's National Championship basketball team...and on another national championship team the year before.... He has actually now played in 15 consecutive playoff games and walked off the court as a winner in ALL OF THEM.

Part II: Midland College won another playoff game again yesterday.. Defeated Collin County in the regional tournament to advance. Got to have that West-Texas attitude... win or kill yourself trying.... unfortunately their next opponent is also a West Texas team, South Plains from Levelland/Lubbock, they defeated Weatherford JC which was the champion of the Northern Texas Conference.

--I think the last Midland College home game had over 4000 people attend......That was a Junior College with 6000 students.... UNT needs to do better.

SE66 is thinking of Ryan McCoy, who we also signed but did not qualify academically.

--I just checked... you are right... I am amazed that two McCoys showed up at the same university playing the same position. . I guess I did not have the REAL McCoy.. I had never heard that he did not qualify academically. I never paid attention to his first name and had thought this one was "our" boy. He is listed in the MC program as being at UNT. When I look at the UNT line scores it just says McCoy.

JUST SHOOT ME--

--JC players are a odd group compared those that attend 4-year schools.... some were poor academicly (some, but not all get much better after leaving their HS environment), some were overlooked (Spud Webb), some were really young coming out of HS and grow and get much better ( Dennis Rodman was under 6-feet in HS), and some some have an odd history such as being a foreign player and are overlooked or need to go where they can have smaller classes while they get better in English. In any case, often good JC programs could defeat many 4-year universities and have players after two years walk in and start their final two years in D-I's. One NCAA final (Oklahoma vs. Kansas) had THREE former MC players .... two made the NBA.... Mookie Blaylock and Ricky Grace.
