State Of The Squad By Position - Cornerbacks

This position could be our Achilles heel. A good corner is a precious commodity and they are pretty scarce. We have some potentially great defensive backs coming in and we should turn the corner (no pun intended) after this year. Here is the roster:

Latif Nuradeen Antoine Bush, the

6-1 195 SR Played in 11 games last year

Isiah Smith 5-8 175 SR Played in 8 games last year

Antoine Bush 5-11 178 JR Played in 12 games last year

Adryan Adams 6-0 185 JR JC transfer

Arthur Stubblefield 5-10 180 JR

Chris Neal 5-10 180 SO Played in 10 games last year

Trevor Ashlock 5-11 175 SO

DeWaylon Cook 6-2 187 FR

Royce Hill 5-11 170 FR

James Hamilton 5-10 180 FR

Latif Nuradeen, the Baylor transfer, started about 5 games last year as Dominique Green moved in and out of the doghouse. He was effective at times, with a total of 30 tackles, but only broke up one pass. Antoine Bush, the other starter, was our most effective cornerback last year and I expect him to continue his same stellar play this year. I believe that JC transfer Adrian Adams will replace Nuradeen as the starter. He had 69 stops in 9 games at NEO last year and an interception. With Green and Roman gone, those are the only three that played regularly last year. Isiah Smith and Arthur Stubblefield were wide receivers last year who are moving to the defensive side for this coming year. Last year was Smith's first to play after several years on the scout team. Stubblefield was moved from DB to WR previously and is now moving back. Chris Neal appeared in 10 games last year but all were on special teams. Trevor Ashlock is a walkon who has showed potential. The real future at this position iis the addition of DeWaylon Cook, Royce Hill, and James Hamilton. Hamilton was a hard-hitting corner prior to his senior year who switched to QB . Hill was one of the Top 35 players in the Greater Houston Area. Cook is another great athlete who played quarterback and some defense and was highly rated by Rivals. All three will likely see action this year on special teams and it wouldn't surprise me see any or all three get playing time at corner. This will be Coach Buckels first year so we can't know whether he sticks with his starters or tries to keep fresh legs in by rotating his better players. Time will tell.

I thought Greg Garden, transfer from Navy, would be in the mix

for a CB position this spring.

I have Greg listed as a safety but if he can play corner, he'd be more than welsome. We may turn out to have a glut of good safeties.
