McCown visits, Cobbs tendered .. and other FA tidbits

By Edgar Thompson | Friday, February 29, 2008, 10:53 AM

The Dolphins’ search for a veteran quarterback begins today with a visit from Oakland’s Josh McCown.

McCown, 28, has started 31 NFL games in six seasons, including his first four in Arizona. Last season, McCown started nine games for the Raiders, sharing time with ex-Dolphin Daunte Culpepper while the team groomed No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell.

McCown, listed at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, finished with 10 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions, giving him 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions in his career.

Typical of a career filled with inconsistency, McCown was 14-of-21 with three touchdowns in a Week 13 win against Denver, but also had two games with three interceptions.

The Dolphins’ quarterback situation wasn’t even that good last season, with Trent Green, Cleo Lemon and John Beck combining for 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Beck, the No. 40 pick in last April’s draft, remains with the Dolphins, who released Green and didn’t renew Lemon’s contract.

In other news,

• Looks like back-up RB Patrick Cobbs will be back for another season.

The Dolphins offered Cobbs an exclusive rights tender, paying him $445,000 next season if he makes the team.

Not bad for a player who was in danger of not making the squad during the ‘07 pre-season. His toughness and special teams play convinced the coaches to keep four RBs on the roster - Ronnie Brown, Jesse Chatman, Lorenzo Booker and Cobbs.

Miami still has four RBs, with Brown, Ricky Williams, Booker and Cobbs. Chatman hit the free-agency market at 12:01 a.m.
