For those that follow NT Mens Golf, read 'em and weep. 10th out of 13 teams. NT was 30 strokes behind the 5th place team, UT-Arlington. Gosh I wish we could recruit better players for the other sports that we sponser and be a little more competitive.

It seems as though for the last 4 or 5 years ever since I've been following UNT athletics that the UNT golf program is a black hole for all of the players we recruit. I happen to know Dustin Thompson who plays on the team and I know he played better in high school than he is playing now. If you read on the athletics site after every one of their tournaments, the coach,Jim Bob Jackson always has the same things to say about his team, "...we were right on the cusp...we're almost there...we just need to cut down on our mistakes..." It's the same excuse everytime. I don't know if it's the lack of talent or the lack of coaching, but this team is bound for nowhere soon.

Exactly! We are not competing against the likes of UTA, Southeastern La., and Jacksonville State. What's up with that?

Read Mean green Sports- after every tournament, all I read is where a member of the UNT team scored the lowest round of the season for the team, or the team improved by six shots over last years team in the same tournament. What they never say is that our teams come in at or near the bottom in almost every tournament. Or so it seems. Talk about positive spin! We only compete against ourselves. Never against the rest of the field.

It really is too bad...the members of the team are really VERY good golfers and definitely have the talent to compete for championships. So, why not? Good question...is it the coach???? Is it the facilities...or lack thereof....is it the players themselves? Don't know...BUT, I do know that golf at UNT was once a big time winning program. Perhaps the AD needs to take a look and see if we couldn't figure out "what's up" with golf at UNT. Seems the tennis program has "righted the ship". Same can happen with golf...UNT COULD definitely be a prime golf program.....

Don't "give up the ship" on the golf team...the players have all the ability to win....GO GOLF!!!!!

This frustration is not a slam on the players. Please don't take it that way. I just don't understand what has happened over the years to a once proud and successful part of our athletic program.

Did in no way take it as a slam on the players...I was just commenting that I thought our team had the players to get the job done....I echo your thoughts on our once proud golf tradition at UNT. Let's bring it back!!!!! It can and SHOULD happen! Go UNT...GO GOLF...

Golf will return to its once proud place of respect when there is enough concern to hire a coach that can get the job done.

It is usually the coach that produces the great teams by getting the great players. There aren't many Fred Cobbs or Dave Williams anymore. Those coaches are hard to find but when one doesn't have success in three or four years you try again, much like a coach in any other sport.

Golf doesn't seem to be a high priority with this athletic administration possibly because of the other pressing necessities. When issues such as a football and baseball stadium are settled perhaps they'll turn their attention to golf.

I realize that there are several good golf courses within 45 minutes of campus, including the one that the team uses at Trophy Club, but was that the reason for not accepting the donation of land for a golf course?

Golf courses cost LOTS and LOTS of $$$ to develop and maintain even if the land is donated. If you do it right, however...take a look at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, OK for an example, you can make a somewhat profitable venture out of it. But, OSU does have a great golf tradition...in fact their golf coach (Mike Holder became the AD at OSU...how about that for a golf coach???), sees golf as a great way to attract attention and students and goodwill, etc., etc. UNT can (and at one time DID) develop the same "tradition" in golf and attract the top area players...just as OSU does year in and year out, but it does take some focus...it can't be an "afterthought" in the AD's plans and budgets.

At UNT there are "bigger fish to fry" right now with the new stadium, attracting more "rears" in the seats for the revenue sports of football and basketball, developing the softball program and on and on. I think Golf will see it's day at UNT once again...I did hear there are plans for a new housing development in Denton that will include a golf course...I hope that is "more than hope" because UNT could use it as a "home course" perhaps and stop traveling to Trophy Club....anyway...time will tell, but golf acn and will be great at UNT once again!

GO MEAN GREEN!
