He was regarded as the best special teams coach in the NFL in the 80's. The head coaching gig didn't go very well, though, and that threw his career into a spiral. Still, it could be a good hire for $MU if the guy still has any gas left in the tank at his age.

It's not his age but the amount of time that he's been away from the game that makes me have doubts that he'll be very successful at SMU. Gansz obviously has the ability but does he still have the fire in his belly to devote to the team's success.

Short-term memory starts to recede a little in your seventies, as well as your ability to run but I don't think that either would be critical in coaching. Joe Pa is now past 80 and can still outcoach many younger coaches BUT he has stayed with coaching all of these years.
