This will always be true because no one can invent a solid device for measuring heart and desire. Maturity is another factor that can make or break ability to play.

Some of these top prospects don't make it because they don't want to. Many have had it relatively easy because their skills were superior to that of their opponents. Then, when they are no longer the dominate, they are not willing to compete because it takes too much dedication and hard work. They are better off at a smaller school where they can continue to dominate without having to put forth the extra effort.

Conversely, some are not physically or emotionally mature during high school and develop those traits while in college. They seem to come out of nowhere but the spirit of competition drives them to excel. There is no way to predict with any certainty which ones will rise to the occasion.

Sometimes the talented (and less talented as well) will thrive under one coach and become disinterested under another. The position coaches and coordinators can also motivate or stymie drive and determination.

Recruiting will always be an inexact science but if the big, fast player has the same degree of motivation as the smaller, slower player then I'll take the former any day.
