UNT to expand development staff to five

I talked to UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal today about his plans for the school's athletic development staff.

Here are the important points that will be covered in tomorrow's paper. UNT is expanding its athletic development staff from three to five. UNT has already hired one person to join the team and another will move into development from within the athletic department's current staff. Mean Green Club coordinator Mandy McKinley is also still on the staff.

As you heard here on the Mean Green Blog, T.J. Leon left for Missouri

Kevin Fralicks later left for UTA.

Villarreal said the staff of five would focus on raising money for a new football stadium. For more on the changes within the athletic department, see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle.

We are asking whoever our fund-raising staff turns out to be to "only" raise number$ not that far removed from what our school's present financial endowment numbers are so............... shouldn't "heavy-hitter fundraiser" qualifications with a proven background be a very large part of the job description qualifications for whoever gets these most crucial jobs? This is hardly the kind of ancillery staff positional hires we've been used to at UNT the last few decades. Our future in Big Time athletics depends on all of their success with this enormous challenge for such an enormous facility.

Still think Hayden Fry & Bill Blakely on a similar consultant contract we had Gene Stallings on would not be a bad idea, but the fact that this idea (and so many others from so many of you) was mentioned on this very forum by another actual graduate of UNT who has lived in the Metroplex since 1972 might also kill any chance of this idea happening, too.

Hey folks! We need a new stadium yesterday/yester-last-few-decades and we don't care who gets the glory in finding the Big Donor(s) for it, either. Future generations of UNT students and alums will have to live with the success (or lack thereof) of what those who most likely will not be on the UNT payroll in the next 25 years while future UNT'ers for the next 40-50 years will (in deed) have to live with what their fundraising talents & efforts are able to deliver (or not able to deliver). (Please forgive the redundacy and run-on sentences); yet.........no new news here, but this is an extremely crucial hire with all this, folks, very, very crucial.

This is really great for some deserving people, but does anyone else think that maybe some positions elsewhere should be expanded. We still have a relatively small football support coaching staff, we need football ops depth and graduate assistant help. Not to mention having two strength coaches for over 300 athletes.

See the other thread for another job that has been posted since July, that somehow has slipped under the radar of the folks here: "Sr. Director of Major Gifts"

My view, bring in a very heavy hitter fund raiser, put most of the athletic development staff under this person and have the person report directly to the President or BOR. His/her's one job is to get donations for athletics and structure stadium financing. Leave the Mean Green Club under the AD, but relieve him of major fund raising duties. Structure the new position's contract on results, pay big dollars, and be able to terminate easily if objectives are not met.

VITO SUCKS!! Was it really necessary to point out where the previous employees went to? He is always taking his shots at NT :D

Yes, it was necessary to tell where they went. It's a question a reader would have and a GOOD REPORTER, which Brett is, trys to anticipate and answer the readers questions. He is always taking shots, because the football team sucked last year. Just ask Coach Dodge!

I went from excited to disappointed with one sentence.

I am curious but I wonder if this has ever been considered? Why not use what works. Why not utilize the talents of those who have proven themselves in this area before? Our very own drex for instance. While actually working for the AD dept in the 80's and early 90's he was constantly doing a lot with much much less, often raising his own money for what needed done. And since then, and more importantly in the the past 6 months as an alumnus only, by using his contacts in Denton he brought in a donation by Pittsburgh Paints of Denton that was the equivilant to $75,000. So if we are expanding our staff to raise funding for this project I wonder if he's been considered or asked to put in for the job. And if not, why?
