The guy can coach, but I think he has "unfinished" business here at UNT. But...think about it...how long would it take you to say "yes" to LSU if they put an offer on the table and you were JJ? It's a career move...nothing against UNT...BUT SEC vs SunBelt...Hmmmmmmmm...let me think about that for how long?????

I hope it is only a rumor!

BUT if he is offered, he will be gone, LSU is his dream job

but i don't see it happening, LSU has too much of an ego to go after a mid major coach. they will go for the biggest name they can get.

Not surprising given that Arkansas fired its coach after going to the tournament 2 years in a row and hired a Sun Belt coach ...

No disrespect to Johnny Jones, but he needs a few more shingles on the wall and multi 20+ win seasons to get a look by LSU. Plus, LSU had the buck$$$$$ to hire just about any top tier head coach out there.

LSU sought its last coach from Samford, so you're point about LSU's ego is off the mark. Get your wiki on, jw05!

That said, I agree that LSU will not be seeking Jones at this point. Call it Beauregard Parish elitism. Props to those who caught the DeRidder reference.

That is after every big name coach they went after turned them down, ie, Gillespie, Floyd, Calipari. And after Dana Altman took the job then changed his mind 24 hrs later. So the sun belt coach was about the 10th choice on the Hogs wish list...

First of all, Floyd is not going to LSU. He and Brady are friends. NO WAY he goes there after they fired Brady. Especially not since LSU is a pretty significant step down from USC in hoops.

On Jones...Jones was at least in some small way involved in putting LSU on probation years ago when he was an assistant there. I doubt they'd have any real serious interest in bringing him back in even IF he had very little to do with the past problems. There are going to be other great candidates like VCU's Anthony Grant that won't come with bad memories of years past.

how is lsu a step down from usc? lsu, in recent memory, has been deeper in the tournament than usc has....granted, they are both great in football, i would also tend to think that lsu is better in basketball as well.

The above does not work for me. How does being falsely accused of making a cash payment to a student-athlete make Johnny Jones even partly responsible for LSU being placed on probation?

LSU player Lester Earl took money from an LSU fan. Later he decided to transfer to Kansas. He falsely accused Johnny Jones of paying him $6,600.

You may very well be correct that LSU does not want him back because it would bring back memories of past problems. That is human nature, but it does not mean Jones played even a small part in causing the problems.

Please read Lester Earl's apology. You may not have seen this. Accusations make headline news, but vindications aren't considered to be very newsworthy.

Which is why I stressed that Jones would be a bad memory rekindled, even if his involvement in the problems were insignificant. I'm not saying he did the wrongdoing. Just that he was there when it all went down and a guy like Grant with absolutely no baggage makes a ton more sense than a guy from their past like Jones. LSU's biggest problem right now is with fan apathy. The fans hated Brady and even though he hasn't done a HORRIBLE job, they stayed away. I don't see Jones being the kind of guy that will ignite the fan base back into LSU hoops.

LSU is definitely a step below USC in hoops. USC just moved into an INCREDIBLE on-campus arena last year and the commitment to basketball is far superior at USC than it is at LSU. The talent level sitting right in the middle of Los Angeles means USC could be a player every single year on a national level if you get a good coach (which SC now has.) The Pac-10 is also far superior to the SEC in hoops. LSU's job has potential, but I think USC has been a sleeping giant that Tim Floyd is on his way to awakening real soon.

The PAC-10 is far superior to SEC in hoops? Then how did an SEC team just win two consecutive national championships?

PAC-10 is definitely powerful but don't discount the SEC.

What are you smoking? You seriously believe that the Pac-10 is "FAR" superior to the SEC in hoops? You might want to look into this a little more.

Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, and Georgia are all bad teams. LSU is a terrible team.

In the Pac 10, Oregon State is terrible. Washington is bad. The next worst team is Oregon who is not bad at all. Two bad or worse teams in the Pac 10, FIVE in the SEC.

UCLA, Stanford, Washington State, USC, Arizona, Arizona State...all VERY good if not great teams at the top of the Pac 10.

In the SEC you have Tennessee. Who's #2? Mississippi State? South Alabama beat them. Kentucky? Vanderbilt? Are you really going to compare them to ANY of the Pac 10's Top 6? I can't do it.

I've looked into it. The Pac 10 is far superior to the SEC in basketball.

The PAC 10 is very strong this season. Things change from season to season. The SEC has been very successful for many years, has had three teams in the final four in recent years and will be very successful again.

By the way, the ArizSt/LSU went into OT before ASU won at a neutral site. If ASU is one of the PAC-10s best and LSU one of the SECs worse, that doesn't speak much of the PAC-10.

Hard to say what you are basing your opinions on, polls are nonsense and Sagarin is nonsense and I doubt you have been courtside to see all these teams. What is not nonsense is success on the court. The SEC has a very distinguised record in the NCAA tournament, and will again.

You got my curiousity up so I did a little looking.

In the last 10 yrs SEC teams have won 3 NCAA tournaments and had two other teams in the Final Four. The PAC10 has not won an NCAA tournament and has had two teams total in the Final Four. Make it 12 years and the results are SEC 4, PAC10 1 NCAA tournament champs.

I couldn't find a source for the overall records of W/L in the NCAA tournament by conference.

Pac 10 also has 2 less teams than the SEC has. I just love these Big 10/Pac 10 is the best discussions.....they always work until the Tourney or Bowls are played, then they die back down.
