The winner, in a close race with Middle Tennessee is NORTH TEXAS.

Just taking the averages of the Rivals Ratings (4.9 to 6.1) for all recruits for each school here are the results:

North Texas - 5.335

Middle Tenn - 5.313

Troy -5.224

UL-Monroe - 5.214

Florida Intl - 5.163

Fla Atlantic - 5.135

Louisiana - 5.119

Arkansas St - 5.058

This eliminates the bogus bonus points where extra points are given for the 10th best player, in say Hawaii, whose RR is lower than non-rated recruits in Texas and Florida. It also eliminated one mistake....that of Gabe Hollivay being listed twice. This rating is a fine tuning of Rivals 'Average Stars' Rating. I extended it to three decimal places because of the closeness of some of the averages. If you rounded it to one decimal place as Rivals does it would mean that the average player for UNT and Middle was 5.3, Troy, ULM and FIU 5.2, and the rest 5.1. The averaging also eliminates the number of recruits each school signed.

Some of these recruits won't begin fall practice. Troy oversigned at 34 recruits, taking a chance that some won't make it past the NCAA Clearing House. I have a feeling that it's also some of their highest rated recruits.

Nevertheless, I think that the top 5 did a commenable job on recruiting. To the bottom 3...you might want to consider a new recruiting coordinator, or coaches who can sell your program.

I am going to take over recruiting at ULL. My strategy will be to recruit the top players from South Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Alaska, Maine, Wyoming, and New Hampshire. I will consistantly have a top 25 rivals ranking! Now my average stars and other measures will be no higher that UNT's, but I will have so many "rivals points" I will win the SBC recruiting crown every year! Woo hoo! Brett Vito will worship me!

For starters, congrats on your recruiting class. It looks like a very strong class for you guys. I'm not sure what we got in Lafayette just yet; but in reality none of us know until they strap on the helmets. Many of us at the lower end of D-1A "rankings" sign guys that have "potential", so we need to see if its realized. I certainly think we got some good young men regardless of "stars". Good luck and hope to make it to Denton for this year's game. Will be my first trip to Fouts.

Shof,

I've said many times that recruiting is an inexact science (or even art) but Rivals has been the closest proven barometer that we have.

Yes, we truly won't know until well after they strap on their helmets and there are plenty of gems that Rivals rates as a 4.9. In fact, it won't surprise me a bit if our only 4.9 turns out to be an all-conference player. It's just that it's hard to keep continuously turning up these hidden gems and rely on them to carry you for the next four years. Some will, most won't.

I'm still not sure if Coach Bustle is a good coach who just hasn't been able to get the players that he needs or if he's also a little short on coaching ability. I'm beginning to think that it's more of the latter. UL has a lot going for it and I've always enjoyed the rivalry so I'm hoping that the Cajuns become another front runner soon.

You'll be very welcome if you make here this fall. I think that you'll enjoy the tailgating and associated festivities up until you have to enter the stadium. At that point, you'll wish that you had brought strong binoculars so that you can see the action. I'm exaggerating some but unfortunately not too much. Looking forward to having you here.

Now come on, it's not that bad. Iset up front at Fouts and I can see the track where the cheerleaders are pretty well. :D
