So, is this the base design the engineers are working from?

I think the engineers will work from/with whatever the new design firm comes up with. To me this is just an incredibly rough "sketch" to prime the pump of early donors so that they would/will give enough money to get the ball rolling with a design firm. (Which is what has just happened.) So in essence this design means nothing. The actual stadium may not look a thing like this. Of course this is pure conjecture on my part.

Not conjecture really, that's pretty accurate. I work in architecture, but we do nothing large scale like stadiums. But, that previous design was (mostly likely) done by another architect. Very rarely will a new architect try and really just go with a previous design from a different architect. It's a finger pointing lawsuit waiting to happen.

We all get excited about the "look" of the thing, but the architects and engineers will first be addressing all the design challenges, budgets, circulation/flow, adjacencies, etc long before the start deciding how it "looks" when it comes out of the ground. Many decisions made during the schematic/planning phase will just automatically dictate HOW the stadium will start to look.

That previous design was more than likely done comepletely opposite. Someone roughly said, put a horseshoe shaped stadium, facing this way, show an upper deck, a pedestrian plaza outside, etc etc. to basically get a pretty picture to use for marketing (which is fine, its done all the time) But in reality, it's really nothing more than a sketch that was done on a computer and possibly might not even work.

That's the analytical side of me...The kid in me, like everyone else is dying to help this thing keep moving!

I think the concept/illustration as presented does have some "wanted" items incorporated into it. A "bowl" or horseshoe shape with an open end for the AC. Split, but single level seating sections on the student side, with the lower level elevated off the field so the first row can oversee the sideline players, unlike at Fouts. I also notice a walkway between the upper and lower seating sections which likewise the first row of the upper section can see over the walkers below. A smaller upper deck on the home side than the previous illustration had, with a suite/club level between and pressbox on top.
