Pittsburgh hired former Southern Methodist head coach Phil Bennett as defensive coordinator and will introduce him at a news conference Monday, according to two people briefed on the decision.

Bennett will succeed Paul Rhoads, who left for a similar position at Auburn. Rhoads had been a finalist for the Pitt head coaching job before the school hired Dave Wannstedt.

Bennett, who spent six seasons leading SMU, was replaced by June Jones.

Bennett's departure from SMU was announced Oct. 28 with four games left in the season. He was the fourth coach to lead the Mustangs since the school came off the NCAA's death penalty in 1989.

Good for him. Bennett seems like a nice guy that just had some bad luck and got involved with a shady program. B)

Agreed. Plus, it is nice that he is no longer at SMU considering I had a hard time disliking Bennett. I wish him well and can no resume my utter dislike for SMU since I don't care for June Jones.
