DeLoach to return as UNT defensive coordinator

DENTON – Gary DeLoach is returning to UNT as defensive coordinator, a source close to the program said Wednesday.

DeLoach spent five seasons as an assistant coach at UNT from 1998 to 2002, and was the Mean Green's defensive coordinator his last three seasons.

UNT led the Sun Belt Conference in scoring defense and total defense in each of DeLoach's last two seasons in 2001 and 2002.

An announcement could be made Friday.

DeLoach spent the last five years as defensive backs coach at UCLA under Karl Dorrell, who was fired. Last season, UNT's defense finished last nationally, allowing 45.1 points per game under Ron Mendoza, who was fired.

Briefly ...

Robert Peachey, an offensive lineman who would have been a junior in the 2008 season, said he has left the team. Peachey, who started one game last season at left tackle, said he was not a good fit in coach Todd Dodge's offensive system. He plans to finish the semester, then decide if he wants to transfer to another school or stay and finish his degree. ... Freshman guard Josh White, UNT's leading scorer at 14.4 points a game, returned to practice Wednesday. White suffered a concussion and a cut above his right eye in a loss to Florida Atlantic on Saturday.

Dodge has covered his need well by getting GD back. There should be some improvement next year and a big jump after Deloach has a chance to work with the new talent in this year's class. Now, do you have Ramone's number?

I'm expecting big things from this team in 2009.

With it being Dodge's 3rd year, Deloach's 2nd, the system should be in place, the talent Dodge is bringing in should start to show dividends, and there should be a stadium well under construction.

it's all green and it's all good.

I guess I am delusional as I expect big things in 2008, I would assume many fans are tired of always playing the waiting game.

Yeah but we're losing a lot of players off this defense and none of them could start for Deloach's 2002 defense. I know the coaching was bad but the talent just wasn't there. And that was our "experienced" defense.

I predict a frustrated Deloach for the bigger part of next season. I would hate to be in film sessions with him.

I just think it will take a while for the players to "get it."

I hope I'm wrong, but realistically I think it's going to take a season.

WINNERS WIN NOW!!! LET SOMEONE ELSE BE ON THIS 3 OR 4 YEAR PLAN. NOTHING LESS THAN 6 OR 7 WINS IN 2008 IS ACCEPTABLE

If Deloach coaches only half as well as he did in his 2002 year, we can probably expect a far better season (+3 wins) than last season. Now I can only imagine what he'll do when he's got his machine running at 100%.

Great news! We can now begin our uprising to being back on the college football map! We will have an outstanding offense no doubt, and a defense that will compliment that nicely. I think DeLoach has some good players to work with and he will put them in positions to succeed. He is a master of preparation and pays attention to details. Great job TD in bringing him back to Denton. Can't wait to hear about it at the banquet Saturday night.

Just to let you guys know....the North Texas Daily...the paper here on campus ahs a big article saying the DC search has rapped up and announcment would me made with in a day or two..this is only my second semster here but this deloach guy sounds like the real deal!!!!! GMG!

Welcome aboard bstn, glad to have you. Coach Deloach built an amazing defense his last time here, arguably the best EVER, but he didn't do it overnight and everyone here needs to remember that. He knows there's a challenge with us losing so many guys this year. The fact that he knows that and is coming anyways tells you all you need to know about the man.

I agree. Our offense should be much improved and we may be in the same situation as last year - having to out gun a few opponents. However, I do think the defense will show improvement as the year progresses. The LB's are going to have to carry us and be very active. We do return Gilmore and Miller who will have to serve as the experience anchors on the line. As for the secondary, simply a change in scheme and the number of recruits and added competition will make them better. Hopefully the D will start hitting its stride as we approach conference because if memory serves me right our non-conference schedule will be tough on a young D.

I would not at all be surprised if our two transfer DBs that are now enrolled make an impact. Having all spring to learn the system will greatly accelerate their ability to make a difference for the D.
