UNT officials -- No contract yet for DeLoach

UNT officials responded to a Freedom of Information Act request today with an interesting bit of information -- there is no contract for former UNT defensive coordinator Gary DeLoach working its way through the UNT system.

A UNT official said it would be at least a week before a deal is in place.

That doesn't mean that DeLoach isn't going to take over as UNT's defensive coordinator, but it might indicate that it will be a few days before the deal is finalized.

The hang-up appears to be that DeLoach is close to becoming vested in the California teaching system, which would ensure him medical benefits when he retires. Accepting the UNT job before he hits the five-year mark would force DeLoach to forfeit those benefits, or at least that is the story I heard from a source outside the UNT athletic department.

I also heard that DeLoach might be pondering an opportunity to coach at another Texas school, but I still expect him to end up at UNT.

D-day for finalizing the DeLoach hire appears to be Jan. 21.

Alright....any guesses as to WHICH Texas school???

If anyone so much as mentions dirty schmoo.....I will just lose it.

Well he has family in Houston, so possibly somewhere down there. I doubt he would go to SMU, as I think he would come here first. I still say though, if Tina says he is coming, then I would put my money on that.

Its my understanding is that he was pushing to get on staff at Texas A&M where he coached from 1980-82. I'm not sure how solid the source of that info is but it makes a little sense. I don't like this suspense at all. We need to start a campaign: DeLo in Denton!

You're dead on. His name has come up several times as a possible hire for the new staff there.

I sometimes wonder if Vito throws in these baseless rumors just to see heads explode here on GMG.com

Maybe he heard something from a media buddy covering another program? I am surprised he envoked the Freedom of Information Act on UNT to get his blog story. Is he in the dog house over there again, or are they "Dodging" questions, so-to-speak?

Another question about coaches: I know many college head coaches have agents, how about assistants? At what salary level does a school have to start dealing with an agent instead of the coach himself?

A&M might make sense but SMU and TCU do not if only for the fact that they are not state schools and service would not count towards tenure. But, as Ramone said, A&M already has two defensive backs coaches in Malone (whom they retained) and McMillian (who was hired from TCU). Reggie Herring is their defensive coordinator so that job is not open either. Houston has filled their staff, Texas Tech has no openings, and unless Texas wants co-defensive coordinators again, I don't believe that there is an opening there. I'm not aware if UTEP has DB openings. So that leaves us, where he is known to have interviewed, as the lone Division 1A state school.

It makes sense that it will happen but I'm not comfortable until I see it in print.

Would be a drop in class, but what about SFA, SHSU, TX State, Midwestern State possibly as DC if open?? They would all be state schools.

I was going to answer you but you'll need to go through my agent. :P
