In the summer before the start of his sophmore year, he got into a fight outside of the bar and hurt his foot, causing him to miss the first game of the season.

You are right though, the Dolphins should not waste their #1 pick on him, rather they should trade it to the Cowboys and let them take him with the #1 pick. Don't worry though, if he is not taken #1 this year, there will be those dumb teams this year that will pass on the guy very similar to the 6 last year that passed on AP - which I bet most of those 6 teams would love to have AP now.

I don't know that it would be a "wasted" pick...but you should never use the #1 pick on a running back.

So if your team's biggest need is a RB, and there exists a high quality pick, you should just trade down and hope you get the guy you want later? What position should be picked first?

RB's are not a "quality" pick in the NFL. Career expectancy is too short, good backs can be found later in the draft, through free agency, trades, etc. Take a look at the top of the league and point to the the #1 pick guy. NE? Green Bay? Dallas? Indy?

Okay, I'll give you that - I see what you are saying. I went back and looked at the past number 1 picks, and if you look at them just position wise it is pretty even as to the RB's, QB's, that went #1 that were successful, but it doesn't show me how many years they played either.
