Arena football is bad enough, now this? Man, I hate minor-league pro football, no matter what it is. It's unwatchable.

The AAFL has a good plan. They're recruiting college football stars who couldn't make the NFL to play close to home. Florida's team is in Gainesville, for instance, and will feature a bunch of Gators. If football-starved fans in college towns need a fix in the spring, this could become a successful minor league.

I think this will be better than NFL Europe, which is mercifully dead.

But this isn't minor-league. The concept here is that it is an extension of a player's college football years. Only players with 4-year degrees can play. Big name college players, but not quite NFL caliber.

Confirmed players: Eric Crouch, Chris Leak, Clint Stoerner, Eli Williams... all before they have even held their draft.

NFL Europe, while also unwatchable, was a true NFL farm system where developmental players from the teams' inactive rosters/practice squads were actually sent there on the club's nickel. Over time, it lost its audience in those countries. This has the potential to draw more "name" players from the college ranks, but they sound no more closer to playing in the NFL than guys in Europe or the CFL. Eric Crouch??? This is the same guy who was so arrogant about being moved from QB to WR/RB that he retired as a means of vengeance against the Rams. What a genius. Clint Stoerner's best days were indoors.

I heard they also signed James Brown, the long-ago UT quarterback who hasn't played in 10 some-odd years. If it works, great. Sounds like less travel for the same caliber (or worse) players.

Sounds familar... A few years back I did some work for a semi-pro team that played its' home games at UTA. That was an interesting experience The Arlington Panthers were a team full of characters, and the team and league worked on shoestring week to week existance.

This league sounds similar

A couple of years ago I saw a documentary that NFL Films did in the 70's about a semi pro team called the Posttstown Firebirds. It was actually a pretty good film and surprising how similar their situation was to the Arlington team in the 90's.
