SMU is close to finalizing the details of a contract for former Hawaii coach June Jones and he is expected to be introduced at a press conference as soon as Monday, a source close to the situation said Sunday.

Jones' contract is expected to be for five years and close to $2 million per year. The deal is expected to be booster funded. SMU athletic director Steve Orsini has reportedly sold up to 20 boosters on the concept of donating up to $100,000 per year for five years.

Jones will bring an exciting offense and instantly make nearly twice as much as any other coach in Conference USA.

Jones reportedly resigned as Hawaii's football coach. Kent Untermann, a former Hawaii player and member of Na Koa, the school's booster club, told KHNL that Jones was leaving because of frustration with how the athletic department was run, not because he felt his salary was too low.

The Honolulu Advertiser, citing Jones' friend Al Souza, reported Jones resigned Saturday morning.

The school and Jones have not made an official announcement.

Jones earned $800,016 a year under a five-year contract with Hawaii that expires June 30. Reports of the resignation came even though Hawaii offered Jones a new contract that would make him the highest paid coach in the Western Athletic Conference.

Hawaii would not say how much it offered Jones. But figures provided by the university show Fresno State's Pat Hill, who earns an annual salary of $1,229,996, is currently the highest-paid WAC coach.

Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier said he asked Jones to call him before deciding on SMU's offer.

Hawaii finished this season 12-0 before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl -- the school's first bowl appearance on the mainland since 1992.

Heh. 'Cause God knows they could never fund it through ticket revenues or merchandising.

Then he's going to love the HILLTOP and it's below run-of-the-mill facilities.

My quick math says SMU will pay JJ between $330K - $500K per win over the next couple years. If they can ever reach 8 wins per season they will end up getting a bargain at $250K. Who doesn't want to spend that type of money for wins over the likes of Tulsa, Tulane and Memphis? Oh wait, I forgot this money will get them better recruits, fan support in DFW, coaching and an invitation to a bigger conference. That sure is a crafty bunch over there on the hilltop.

The cliche that some people have more money than sense comes to mind...

Don't think they can pony up enough money to build an island around the hilltop. Anyway, this is surely a red flag to the NCAA; in which they should start checking the monthly slush fund statement. They could save alot of money and just buy a CUSA trophy.

The Razorback Foundation, which is a group of wealthy alumni, did something very similar to land Coach Petrino.

The Hilltop is an island.

Yup. Hang it up, boys. Turn in your season tickets, burn all your green gear.

June Jones has just killed UNT football. We can never compete now. How on earth can two spread offense football teams exist in the same universe? They can't. Might as well plan to mow lawns on Saturdays next September.

You couldn't be more right. Because, prior to his even being hired, it is much less "fantastical" to simply assume that lil' ol' NT could never hold its own against the big bad SMU...why do we even try?

Big bad SMU? Only in the eyes of our posters. They've had two non-losing seasons (6-5 and 6-6) in the last eighteen. We've actually elevated them by trying to put them down.

They will get some recruits that we wanted, without a doubt, but other than that we should have no more concern about them than we do TCU. They're not on our schedule and, unless we can get both them AND TCU on our schedule each year, I don't even care about playing them.

I wish them well. They are in a far deeper hole than we ever were and even with a great new coach it will take a while for them to be a big factor.

If we can put some wins on the board then I think that Todd Dodge can compete with June Jones in recruiting, especially in Texas.

A bunch of schools do this. Calm down.

Considering the current talent level at $MU, I do not expect instant

success for the program. Complete over haul of the offense and

defense, new coaches, and while trying to connect to the high schools

and area high school coaches.

I do believe Coach Dodge and North Texas needs to have a better

season next year, to help the recruiting efforts. I do believe Coach

Dodge can go head to head with any coaches as far as recruiting

goes, and that is a big advantage for North Texas football. Geez,

look at the caliber of the recruits Coach Dodge and his staff are

putting together for the 2008 class, after a disappointing 2-10 season.

Any success on the field will prove to recruits that Coach Dodge will

win and is building a great program.

I wonder if JJ will consider the continuing of the North Texas-$MU

series?
