West Virgina's Spread Offense

I watched most of the WV/zero-u game last night.

I was amazed at how easy the WV run game was working.

I know Coach Dodge's spread offense is very simular to WV's,

so can our spread be as effective as WV's spread offense.

First, I noticed the WV OL was dominating the zero-u DL.

WV's guys were big, but, they were very Quick and Fast,

plus WV used a guy that was a type of hybred, TE/FB as

a lead blocker. I know one other thing, the WV blocking by

each player was school book old fashion knock the crap out

of the opponent. The WV OC was right on with the correct

plays for the zero-u defensive coverage. Made zero-u look

like a high school defense!

WV's defensive front DL was very quick also. The massive

zero-u OL was grabing everything they could, especially the

giant OT. I bet the officals could have called holding on the

zero-u OL all through the game.

One thing for sure, WV's has speed at every position, and

just flat out ran everything zero-u could throw out!

I look at the recuits that are comming in with the 2008 class,

and I see that every one of the recruits are very fast and quick.

Believe me, the speed we are getting will pay off down the road!

Just ask zero-u, speed killed them! The WV RB, Devine, to be

such a small guy, is lightening quick and has a overdrive gear

when he gets into the open. Devine could not be caught by the

zero-u secondary at all! Man that kid is fast, reminds me of

the Dallas Cowboys great RB, Tony Dorsett!

OU had three defensive starters out and a fourth playing with a fracture in his foot. That probably helped to some degree. A truer picture of OU's defense versus the spread is their games versus Tech and Missouri. When their defense is fully healthy, OU hasn't had problems with spread offenses. You can cover for one guy being out, maybe in a game like that. But, three...it was too much to ask.

Compound that with Stoops' bonehead calls and there are many teams that would have rolled on OU yesterday, not just WVU.

Some of you may remember that Noel Devine in the kid that Deion Sanders tried to adopt and bring up to Prosper High School a few years back. For whatever reason, Devine got homesick, stole Deion's car, drove to DFW and flew back to Florida.

True, but Harrell and Daniel don't come close to WVU's quarterback's running ability.

Our offense and the WVU are not similar at all, other than we start off from the spread formation.

I didn't think it would be possible to make OU look slow (considering how they looked against us), but WV sure did. What an amazing display of athletic superiority by WV last night. I was impressed. OU tried that quick out pass to the WR that they used to score at will against us and the WV defense stopped them again and again -- maybe not backing off 10 to 20 yards had something to do with it.

TDs offense is in no way similar to WVUs, except the QB is in the shotgun.

WVU his historically run the ball 70% to 75% of their plays. Historically they have been near the top in the country in rushing yardage. They often use two backs in the formation, plus the QB, not just one back as UNT does; they often use TEs, UNT does not even have one on the roster. The WVU QBs are more like tailbacks in the old single wing, better runners than passers. WVU is a running team and always has been.

WVU & UNT's "spread" offense have very little similarities. The Mountaineers have always been known for a good ground game. Before Pat White & Steve Slaton showed up, Quincy Wilson tore the Big East up.

If you're looking at some of the reasons why their offense is so explosive, look no further than their QB. Pat White is one of the most explosive QB's in college football. Granted, he'll never be a QB on Sundays, he'll sure as hell be returning punts/kicks and catching passes in the NFL. Steve Slaton is an NFL caliber runningback and Noel Devine will probably develop into one sooner than later.

I would be ECSTATIC if Dodge turns NT into a WVU clone. I'm a firm believer in a strong running game. Judging by what I've seen so far, we're more along the lines of what Leach & Texas Tech do. Our QB's are meant to sling the ball while our RB's are blockers & 4th & 5th options (Leach does use the RB alot more than Dodge).

I would be ECSTATIC if Dodge turns NT into a WVU clone. I'm a firm believer in a strong running game. Judging by what I've seen so far, we're more along the lines of what Leach & Texas Tech do. Our QB's are meant to sling the ball while our RB's are blockers & 4th & 5th options (Leach does use the RB alot more than Dodge).

We ran the ball almost twice as much as Tech (1425-771). We also outgained them in rushing 118.8-59.3 ypg. This is because A. Our QB (Vizza) does not just sling the ball--he can serve as an additional RB; and B. Leach does not use the RB as much as Dodge.
