West Virginia hiring Stewart after big Fiesta win

West Virginia interim coach Bill Stewart was named the school's full-time head coach Thursday morning.

The announcement came just hours after he led the Mountaineers to a 48-28 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

"He obtained this position the old fashioned way -- he earned it," said WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong, who made the announcement at the team hotel in Scottsdale, Ariz. "Billy led us to our biggest football victory in the school's history against Oklahoma and he, his coaching staff and his support staff are outstanding Mountaineers, leading us through a tough time. Shouldn't this now also start up the Terry Bowden rumors again?

I don't like Martz or Jones. I think they're wasting money when they could've wrapped up Shula for around $1.25 or so and gotten some better assistants. But whatever, anything's an improvement over Bennett I suppose (famous last words, right?)

I think the only thing impressive about the $ SMU is throwing at a coach is that it IS in line with the other schools offering jobs -- which were mostly BCS schools where you heard figures around this mark. $1.7 mill/year to coach in CUSA IMHO is f'ng ridiculous. That means June Jones will be making the same amount of dough to coach SMU in C-USA West that Spurrier makes to coach USC in the SEC-East... I'm sorry, but that's just sad.

There's no reason SMU can't turn around, Bennett made a lot of changes adminstratively that'll help to make it more competitive and Orisini continues to do that. Tulsa and TCU are both competitive. SMU should just follow the same line. Maybe June Jones will turn it around, but Martz -- mehhh, SHULA SHULA SHULA.

If you want to see my rant about Shula, just check the other thread on here about SMU's hiring thing.. I posted about a 2 paragraph synopsis on why they need him. And why he's the best option.

That is, if a "stepping stone" means "on your way to" OC at Utah State, or a self-employed recruiting advising service based out of your old Denton home.

Every job is a grave yard if you suck. Stepping stone only applies to coaches with the ability to coach. To be honest any job can be a stepping stone also.
