As a former long time College coach told me, 50% of recruiting is a "crap-shoot". If you like the guy and think he can fit in what you are trying to accomplish, you try and sign him.

It does mean something. On average a 3 star recruit is better than a 2 star recruit. Yes there are exceptions, but generally they are just that - exceptions. And to me- if someone is rated 3 stars that means rivals has actually SEEN that person and cared enough to put them to 3 stars. That or the fact that large schools are chasing them (yes I know we all get up in arms about this, but if a big school is recruiting, they've seen something).

I would like to see comparisons of player's "stars" from before to after their college playing years, to see how they really panned out. I'd bet 50% of the higher stars dropped, but 50% of lower ranked players did better. It's more about maturity and adapting to the college speed and level. It's too hard to predict how a 17-year old will play at 22, just like it would be a guess on 12-year-olds doing well in high school. Some you know would do well, others you'd have no idea who develops faster.

I don't know if 50% is really acurate. The bigger schools get beter recruits, 4* 5*, there is a reason for that. There is also a reason that they typically do better than most other schools. yes recruiting is a crap shoot but stoops at OU didn't build that program on dumb luck recruiting. The stars may not be always be acurate but i would venture a guess that the higher stars, 4 and 5, are typically better predictions of what a college athlete will be than 2 or 3 stars.

It's like the NFL Draft. Mostly 1st round success stories, but the busts are the ones everyone remembers. Same with later round and free agent pickups. Sure there will be a Tom Brady in there, but there will also be a host of guys who never see anything past a preseason game.

Who cares? Everyone saw Tre in the state final last year shake off 30 men with his 4.6 speed, yet he is GAGA worthy.

Did you see Meager throw for 600 yards? Doesn't matter. Horrid.

What is your problems with Newton? And BTW, your comparison to Meager doesn't hold water. Meager threw for 600 yards in one game. Have you seen Newton's career stats? Trust me, his highlights aren't just from last year's state title game.

I need to work on making my sarcasm more obvious. Or maybe even create an actual <tag> that gives it away.

For the record, I love Tre. But I'm not gaga over him. I've been following this long enough to temper any enthusiasm until they actually produce at our level. But I can totally understand that the star rating system and the stats are about the about as good as we can do to gauge where these players will be.

My own personal experience is to not judge them until I see them in person, at a game.

The greatest running back I ever saw in the collegiate level was by the name of LaDainian Tomlinson. I knew he was great before the end of his junior year at TCU. Before he put a foot on the NFL turf. He doesn't seem to be doing so bad.

Tre is a fantastic player at the high school level, who could prove invaluable to the team because of his experience in the system. I'm just not ready to hail any high school player as the guy to take us to the next level, especially when we don't have that same system clicking (yet) at our level. I know you didn't say he is our savior, btw...

Whatever happened to Lance Dunbar, did he get injured? I thought he would be the fantastic counterpoint to Micah in our system. Everyone wants Tre because of his vision and football instincts. Don't we already have that in Mosely? Good Lord I LOVED Mosely for his uncanny ability to get 6 yards out of a 2 yard play. Obviously, it would be stupid to turn Tre away, but why not get excited for the 4.3 guy that can beat the linebackers to the sideline, and make that first guy miss? That's what I thought Dunbar was recruited for.

One of the places I think it does make a difference is in the recruiting, the more 3 star players you have the more apt another 3 star player will be to go to that school. The perception is that that team will be better than a 2 star filled roster in a couple of years and everyone likes winning.
