Take a look at this year's recruiting class for UT:

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/result.asp

That's two 4* running backs and another 3* in addition to Newton. Add these guys to a backfield that already includes Foswhitt Whitaker and Cody Johnson (two 4* from last recruiting class), a 3* and a 4* from the '06 class and Chris Ogbonnaya who will be a senior.

Tell me, again, why kids enjoy sitting in these log jams at schools like UT.

We certainly do offer an opportunity for some of those types of kids to come in and compete and play early. Seems like a lot of those kids that get caught up in the log jam at a high profile schools transfer out and are never heard from again. Some of them do excel, though. I'm sure the thought process is "I can beat these guys out". It sure wouldn't hurt my feelings if he changed his mind and committed here.

I have thought since Riley changed his mind to come to UNT, that with he and Newton being such great friends, coupled with the lack of quality backs we have in up and comers, that he might just decide to come here....nothing more than a thought though, as I have absolutely nothing but thought to base that on.

Big Nate said last year that Texas paid more than North Texas. Seriously though, I think Little Newton has big aspirations, and thinks if wasn't in a spread like ours, he can put up some big rushing numbers. Just my thoughts, nothing else.

I think sometimes (or most of the time) the kid is trying to please others. (i.e. Nate Newton)

National Championship rings?

First, since when did saying "I carried the water on a national title squad" become a badge of honor? Second, unless Vince Young has a little brother he's going there to watch from the bench every year as they win 9-10 games, lose to OU, and play in the Holiday Bowl.

Because each and every one of them believes that they will be the one playing, and those other three all-state players recruited at their same position will be the ones to sit. I've been around athletes being recruited, and for many of them, the thought never occurs that they may get squeezed out. They just do not realize how tough its going to be.

For instance: back many, many years ago (in my former journalism days), I interviewed a runningback at North Texas just prior to the start of his freshman year. He was an all-district, all-region type in high school, and he told me that he planned to rush for a thousand yards that season. He really was not bragging, he was just projecting his past success onto his college career. He rushed for about 300 yards that year. I saw him again before his sophomore season, and he remembered our previous conversation. He explained that he simply did not fully understand just how good everybody at this level was. EVERYONE was all-district and all-region. EVERYONE was a stud in high school. It wasn't until he got on the field in college that he realized just how much higher the level of athleticism was.

I think that's what happens to a lot of these kids. They were studs in high school and they fully expect to be be studs in college.

Look at some of these recruiting classes at A&M and UT and OU, with three or four players at linebacker or offensive line. That doesn't include the three or four that were recruited at that spot last year and the year before that, and the three or four that will be recruited next year. Odds are that many of those kids are going to sit, but they don't want to hear it. They might listen in a couple of years, but not now.

There's nothing wrong with these kids thinking they are the best and that they will be the ones starting on a national championship contender over the other recruits. Players like Newton have pro potential and they should want to play for and beat the best. If they don't think they can beat out a couple other guys for their spot then they probably have no shot at the next level. I'd live to have Tre come to NT if he thinks the team, the system and the atmosphere is best for him but not because he doesn't think he's good enough.

Although UNT is not at a BCS level there is plenty visability for Tre to show his talent and easily move the the NFL. Maybe we can get Mean Joe Green to talk to Nate and say, "hey, Tre can make it to the NFL through UNT...I did"! There is nothing wrong with playing at UNT and working under a guy that developed him as a quality HS football player. We (UNT) are not chopped liver guys! Act like winners, be winners and we will attract winners!! Let's start to get the kids in our backdoor!

GO MEAN GREEN!

Are you serious, PRO potential??? He'll have trouble hitting the field at DKR-Memorial field.

Hey straw man, I was just saying that's probably the rationale of the players. I didn't say it was completely accurate. I just think a lot of these guys think they are good enough to play on a team that is mentioned in the national title race every year so by committing to Texas they honestly believe they are going to be on the field in the Rose Bowl, or along side a Vince Young, Adrian Peterson, etc as they play for it all.

And you are basing this on???

He's got the size, speed and big numbers so far I say we wait until he plays a down before judging.

I was more than please with Micah Mosely this year and am excited about Dunbar from Haltom City joining the team next year. Plus, Cam Montgomery was rated highly by rivals and should contribute next year since he was obviously injured the majority of the year. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Newton come to NT, but the cupboard is far from bare, just needs a little stocking for depth.

I for one don't get the whole Tre Newton love fest. I feel like he gets hyped more for being Nates son than for anything else. Granted I haven't seen a ton of SLC games but the ones I have seen I thought Riley actually ran the ball better than Tre. Those games may have been the exception. I certainly don't think he's at the level J-Mo was when he came in as a Freshman. I also find it puzzling that many people on this board bash players we are recruiting that have 4.6 speed as being too slow yet are gay for Tre who by the way also has 4.6 speed.

(Any of you kids that hang with Tina are free to use "Gay For Tre" as your own.

That was actually going to be the title of my post if/when Tre Newton switched committments.

Now I'll look like I'm stealing material.

Damn you, adman.
