DENTON – UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said the school will receive a $250,000 buyout from the Air Force Academy, which backed out of a contract to play the Mean Green in 2009. The Falcons will face Minnesota in its first game at TCF Bank Stadium on Sept. 12, 2009, instead.

RV is a financial prophet to knowingly schedule high profile games that will get bought out. Keep up the good work. Miami and AFA was easy money.

Is that what it is?

Guess it will be ok if we can schedule an equal, or even better, opponent.

But, is there anything more to this?

I think another factor in their decision is that they now come to the North Texas area to play TCU every other year. They do not need another game in the same area for recruiting purposes as they did when the contract was first signed.

These teams wanted to play us

We were set to play Miami at their new stadium and AF was going to come to Denton and be our marquee game of the season..

Wins and Losses speak louder than words and contracts.....

I hope we dont schedule Div 1-aa teams and can at least play a decent OOC opponent.

Not me. I don't care what the name is -- if we're financially viable, I want us to schedule wins. Give me a FCS or a beatable FBS... So what if attendance is a little less (which won't be a huge impact if it's the first game of the year anyway)... we need WINS. WINS, WINS, WINS. Schedule for success... that's how I'd love to build something here.

I agree. Scheduling the 1AA's (I'll always call them that) has really just killed Texas Tech, Boise State, Hawaii, Ok State, aTm, etc now hasn't it.

Good going RV - Thanks for getting us some more money.

Oh come on! Do we really think that RV had much to do with this??? Do you really think his master plan was to first schedule them, then find a way to get them to cancel on us???

Not sure what he is getting credit for here...

      Most of that is true and some of that is speculation. But what is for sure is that if they don't get to the minimum required schools then it all dries up. So, better spend some to have some. Or spend none and lose it all.

      The PAC owes the MWC $55M for the schools they took, what's not clear is if they are helping pay the $18M exit fees for these schools which are separate from the poaching fee. If they are that's another $90M. You throw in 2 AAC schools and that's $54M is you pay the full exit or $34M if you cover the extra over the $10M normal exit fee. Worst case scenario you are looking at $200M, and W/OSU do not want to spend their entire war chest, they need that money to try to keep spending like they are a P4.

      UNT transfers

      They are all playing par for the course in relation to their productivity while at UNT. They just do less overall due to the lesser minutes they are playing. Of the group, Edwards is actually playing better. Well, slightly more efficient. He did just repeat some of his UNT antics last night while losing to Alabama, 21 points on 20 shots.

      It's been noted literally a few posts above yours that the PAC has 1/4 billion dollars to help alleviate financial difficulties. Not sure if they're willing to spend that money to get there, but they only have so long to reach their number of mandated full-time/football only athletics members. Again, if there is any option to get there then we have to do what we can in order to get there. Memphis and Tulane collaborated together to turn down their offer. There is a reason for that. They believe the grass is greener on the other side for THEM. And they very well may be right. Who is to say we get an invite to their pasture? I am likened to believe we do not. So, we have to do what is best for US. And frankly, that's getting out of a conference that is going to be SBUSA in only a matter of time.
