From Vito's Blog:

Word is Todd Dodge is taking a side trip to Mississippi to visit a recruit or two after taking his son Riley to Birmingham, Ala., for shoulder surgery this week. Here is my somewhat factually based guess on what Dodge is up to -- making a final sales pitch to defensive end Anthony Barnes and offensive lineman Edward Prince of Wesson (Miss.) Copiah-Lincoln Community College and possibly defensive end Jack Hayes of Perkinston (Miss.) Gulf Coast Community College.

UNT has offers out to Barnes and Prince. Barnes visited UNT in late November and is a player the Mean Green appears to have a good chance at landing. Prince might be a bit of a long shot considering he has offers from Kansas State and Oklahoma State and is set to visit both schools in January. Hayes could be a secondary plan if Barnes goes elsewhere, but has an offer from Troy, which has a lot more to sell at this point coming off yet another winning season.

UNT also saw two recruits it offered scholarships elect to play elsewhere Wednesday in center Emmanuel Aluko and defensive tackle Chris Asumnu of Alief Elsik. Both committed to Tulane.

UNT is set to host a new batch of recruits this weekend, but I have yet to hear who might be in Denton with this group.

In another interesting note, Sports Illustrated dedicated its Inside College Basketball page to New Orleans this week. Noted UNT killer Bo McCalebb is featured prominently in the story and there is also a photo of him on the page. UNO upset nationally ranked North Carolina State earlier this season and appears to be getting back on track after Hurricane Katrina under new head coach Joe Pasternack, a New Orleans native.

The story is good publicity for the Sun Belt. Be sure to check it out if you have a chance.

I would also like to hear from all our loyal blog readers. Post the No. 1 recruiting target left on your wish list for UNT. My suggestion is Jacquies Smith, a defensive end from South Oak Cliff who appears to be a lock to go to Missouri or Michigan State. UNT needs some playmakers on defense, which after last season’s performance and the loss of players like Aaron Weathers and Jeremiah Chapman is a little like saying the Pope is Catholic.

The coaching staff knows a lot more than we do about Barnes. He could be a real jewel or a bust. The 1* rating shouldn't be a concern since he didn't play last year. We definitely need a couple of defensive ends to replace Chapman and Burruss.

I'm pretty sure on scout the 1 star just means they haven't been graded yet.

Ask Coach Dodge to check out East Mississippi Jr College-

DT Tim McGee, 6-5, 300, Scout 3 *** still avalable, has offers, undecided

DE Demetrius Culpepper, 6-5, 245, Scout 3 *** still available, has offers, undecided
