After defeating Iowa and Rice, Monroe loses to Nichols St. giving them only their second victory over a D-1 team. The other NSU victory was over New Orleans. ULL also loses (to UCF).

Still amazes me how ULL's wheels have fallen off in the last couple of years. They used to be a perennial Belt power in hoop.

I think that had everything to do with Mike Southal. Once he left, ULL has been struggling.

Southall was part of it; but he was in and out of the line-up with issues as well. This team is VERY young. Coach Lee missed with some Juco recruits as well as potential HS recruits after getting the gig. That put us in a big hole. Last year was essentially the start of building the team back with HS players. We also have no post presense. Thankfully that has been addressed with 2 big men for next year (from the Juco ranks) and I think they will have 2 and 3 years eligibility respectively. Right now our young guys just can't seem to find the bucket! Last night at UCF was deplorable FG% wise (around 25%). Maybe that was rust coming off finals; but it was terrible. Thursday night at home against McNeese might give us a good idea of what this team can expect the rest of the year. We are probably a very low seed right now come conference tournament time.

I have to wonder what is going on at ULM. Preseason picks to win the west division.

Played an agressive early schedule, playing Kansas and MichSt. Has a good win at Iowa, and beating a Big10 team at their place is nothing to sneeze at (to be sure, this is not the Iowa of old, this year probably the worst Big 10 team, it's wins are over Idaho and Simpson and NIowa and the likes). ULMs losses at SFA and Nicholls makes one wonder.

The guy expected to be ULMs leader, Brandon Roberts, is no longer starting and did not play at all vs Nicholls. Last season the team collapsed after Roberts was hurt, is his injury lingering? Grades? What?

The freshman, Raphael, who was to bring much needed help to their inside game, is no longer starting and did not play vs Nicholls. Grades? It's that time of year.

Conference play is different, and it is too early to downgrade ULM. Guys like Tony Hooper can beat you on any given day and he seems to be stepping up his game. But I wonder what is going on with Roberts and Raphael.

NICHOLS STATE is a Southland team.

The top three in Southland-West are now 23-1 [sam Houston, SF Austin, and UT-Arlington]

Nicholls (two "l"s, please) is not one of the top 3 and is now 2-9 vs D1 competition.
