UCF...?

Anyone else get the idea that we'd be sitting in a skillet by putting that thing under our Texas sun? I know, I know, it's doing fine in Florida. Didn't they have cases of heat exhaustion in their first game?

UCF's new stadium was built for an amount in that ballpark.

The problem is that UCF's stadium is cheap... as in it is nothing but aluminum bleachers with a minimal stucco facade. Hell, they cut back on water fountains and still went over budget.

Fortunately, construction costs in Florida are higher than Texas... we can probably do better (although smaller).

One of the construction costs for this project that I'm curious about is the earthwork and grading. If you've even been over to the proposed site, there's a pretty significant slope/elevation change. You always hope for nice piece of flat land to build on, but nothing is ever completely flat. But this site will require a very large amount of earth to be cut away and/or several retaining walls. Sometimes the stadium itself can become part of the retaining wall. Short of the long, the additional earth work alone will eat up some dollars that some other stadiums might get to use for aesthetics.

Then again, a slope or grade could be a benefit to us as well as an earthen burm prevents having to build tall peers and beams.

Montana's Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

As for functionality I really like Middle's Floyd Stadium.

At Floyd there's not a bad seat in the house and your right on the field. Floyd as I remember it seemed to be mostly made up of "Block" and "Aluminum" which seems would cut down on cost? Their open suites that allowed people to combine their money to purchase is awesome. In the third picture above of the visitor's side they are just under the edge of the upper deck. They are open concept, right up behind the lower seats and have lockable closets to store equipment plus they come with TV hookups etc. I've been there three times now and enjoyed all three wins from very close up. :D

I don't like the aluminum-on-stilts look. Too contemporary. Give me molded stands into the side of a slope like the land is holding the stadium. A below ground level bowl and field will trap noise in too. :)

I don't either but it's an easy fix to build a nice looking facade around it. I have seen several of the HS stadiums do this to help with wind and to give it solid look. And the cost savings of steel/aluminum posts over cast-in-place concrete piers has to be much more affordable.
