I bring this up every few years. The south is notoriously bad for wrestling, but there are quite a few in the area that have wrestling programs, some quite good. And of course wrestling is a cheap sport to support. We used to have quite a team back in the 70's. I haven't looked at our Title 9 info in a few years, but...aren't we now able to add a men's program? If so, it's a big mess between baseball, rugby, lacrosse, hockey, and wrestling, all of which have shown some degree of success at UNT at one time or another.

But again, wrestling is notoriously cheap to support. And there are a lot of guys in the REGION (not just the state) that were great in HS and don't go on to compete in college, which gives a wealth of talent to tap into. When we had it as a club sport when I was still enrolled there were quite a few state qualifiers/champions that showed up for love of the sport. More than a couple would probably be happy to help coach, as would I (though I'm not much for head-coach material, more like a systems and drills coach).

Any thoughts?

won't happen.

we want baseball first, you have to add a women's sport or drop a men's sport.

adding wrestling makes no sense at this point as it would require adding two women's sports or dropping two men's sports in order to add baseball also.

Yes, baseball should be the next men's sport added. Okla. State and OU have good wrestling programs but not many in Texas. Richland college in Richardson used to have a good program also.

Baseball is primary, but Wrasslin' is cheap to run and popular in its own way. The only other sport I'd want is Hockey (popular, with local facilities and a conference member which is awesome in the sport, plus the prestige of being the first in Texas to offer it on the NCAA level (but hockey would be expensive as hell, especially compared to Wrestling.))

But title 9 means we'd have to add a few women's sports...so...how about Women's Bowling, Golf and water polo...can't be too pricey..

anyone got a spare 100 mil? (50 for the Fball Stadium, 30 for the Baseball Stadium and 20 for the new programs)

Dear Santa,

I want soccer and David Beckham, and is ignorant wife, to be striken from this earth. That is all I want for Christmas.

Thank you

Lifer...this is why I love your posts...you are so gentle and vague in your meanings...and...Barry Bonds, et al..."what a bunch of great guys"....without the "juice" baseball would be even more boring than it is today!

O.K., let's not get this thread moving in that direction again...I am sure GreenBat will come out "swinging" too! Again, Lifer...you say you played soccer...so, again, at what level? Becks and Victoria are not the entire world of soccer....thought you might like to know that just in case. They are simply some "new" Hollywood celebs the media love to show. You may not like Beckham, but he does still have a great left foot...or haven't you noticed? He's an aging star hanging on a bit and getting what he can out of the last few years of his career...and, it has been a great career. He did make a great member of the England squad at one point and played a significant role for Man U. Now, not so much.

Anyway...no problem for me...this is a nan-issue...what is an issue is MEAN GREEN SPORTS! GO MEAN GREEN!

I very much dislike baseball, though I do enjoy watching it at the college level, and I would have to agree that the baseball program needs to come before the wrestling program.

Is cheerleading also considered a sport for title ix purposes? Since the cheerleaders and dance team members are rewarded scholarships (at least they are at UTA), I think they should be counted for title ix. Women's gymnastics would also be a good sport for UNT to add, since the only other Texas collegiate women's gymnastics program happens to be in Denton, and the other nearest programs are in Oklahoma. Denver and Arkansas also have teams.

BTW, I have a poll going on the UTA fan site as to which men's sport UNT should add. The choices are baseball, soccer, tennis, wrestling and "other." I'll let you know how it turns out. SFA just added baseball a couple years ago. Maybe that would be a good program to research to see what it takes to start up. ;)

NO --- a lot of minor sports have NO fan interest and just cost money that could be better used in other sports or academics.

Besides Baseball (or softball) and Soccer has more interest and a lot of people post-college do play these sports and have some interest. These should be considered long before wrestling.

I realize it won't happen but does everyone realize NT's football players in recent years have had 3 state champion wrestlers....Isac Thomas in La before he moved to TX, Sky Pruitt in Utah and Venegas in Kansas.

I don't think I called anyone names, plus you keep stating that you like college and high school baseball, but not professional. Aren't we talking about NT baseball?

Also, I'm well aware that there is more to the soccer world than Beckham and the Spice Girl, and yes he might have had a good left foot, but I haven't seen it in a while. Seems to me his "ankle" is always injured allowing him to collect a check but not play.

Yes, I do prefer HS and college baseball to the VERY boring professional game...but, given a choice between HS & College baseball or HS & College scoocer...I choose soccer every time.

Beckham is an "aging" star....his injuries have slowed him a great deal...left foot is still deadly, but it's tough to use it when you are either on the bench or slow to get into position. So far, however, he is not being accused of trying to prolong or enhance his career with any 'Roids or HGH ala the "stars" of major league baseball. If he was still the super star he certainly once was, he would not be playing for the LA Galaxy. We'll see if he makes it back to the England team in this year's World Cup qualifying matches. That will probably tell us all we need to know about Beck's ankle and prospects for continuing his career.

Anyway...It's just a "fun" discussion....if we were in Vegas...my money would go to baseball at UNT before we see men's soccer return. Too bad, but the "odds" favor baseball ocver soccer...bad call, but...more $$$ spent, more scholarships needed, more facilities to build...but, I digress and re-state the obvious.

If UNT does add men's baseball, I'll be at the park watching from time to time....and thinking about how much more fun it would be to be watching men's soccer!

Both games are about as exciting to watch as watching grass growing, but if we have to have one, I'd prefer baseball...
