My Player Ratings Thru Six Games

I have been tracking the statistics of the individual players for the first six games of the year. I use the statistics per minute played, not for the total game, since obviously the amount of playing time is vastly different. Scoring is simply the number of points divided by the minutes played. I also add "hustle' or 'floor game' for the contributions of thos that are not scorers. Hustle is rebounds+assists+blocked shots+steals-turnovers divided by the number of minutes played. I then just add the two together for my final rating.

Here are the results for Cameron thru New Mexico State:

01 Collin Dennis .99+.15=1.133

02 Keith Wooden .73+.32=1.051

03 Kedrick Hogans .38+.42=.800

04 Tristan Thompson .51+.28=.792

05 Quincy Williams .42+.33=.752

06 Josh White .64+.06=.702

07 Justin Howerton .21+.48=.690

08 Adam McCoy .39+.28=.667

09 Ben Bell .26+.30=.565

10 Dez Willingham .40+.16=.561

11 Harold Stewart .26+.22=.485

The two walkons, Horne and Montague would actually have ranked first and fourth respectively had they had enough minutes played to be considered.

I like the idea, and i'm not dissing that, but its hard to believe Howerton is better then anybody on the team..

Howerton has been contributing in limited time...Stewart is the one I'm surprised is so low...it seems like hes been a big boost off the bench.

Take Hogans out of the mix and it's my starting five.

So you want a line up which averages together 3.7 assists per game? Bell hasn't been great but hes the only player actually handing out assists. JJ seems to think Josh should be on the ball and Ben should be a scorer...Ben's up over a shot and a half per game this season than last...switch those and the line-up will be fine...Josh, Ben and TT starting, Collin and Dez seeing most of the bench minutes.

Stewart is a decent rebounder and shot blocker but the main thing that killed him is the number of times that he's turned the ball over. As to scoring, he hasn't shot a lot but has made half of his shots, which is almost equal to his free throw percentage.

On the other hand, Hogans has played 50 minutes without a single turnover. He also ranks fourth in RPM and shoots better than 50% from the field.

Howerton really has borderline minutes to be considered in the mix. His assists per minute ratio is about the same as Ben Bell's but I'm sure that if he had the minutes that Bell has that his average wouldn't be nearly as high. But he is a good rebounder and does adequately in filling a role.

Bell would probably earn his minutes if he could hit some threes. He is a horrendous 1 for 12 from beyond the arc.

Based on statistics, White should be a 2. not a 1. He doesn't even average 1 assister per GAMe and he has gotten the most playing time. He also has the most turnovers on the team.

Absolutely! CBL, I appreciate all the information you have provided on this board. I understand that you are out of state and can't make the games. If you have not seen each game live or attended practice, I would imagine that it would be extremely difficult to analyze this team from afar. First of all, let's not get too hung up on stats! No way in hell do I put Collin Dennis on the bench in favor of Ben Bell. Bell's inability to make a shot against UTA killed this team. (And, Collin Dennis not playing) . If you want a guy that does not penetrate, hit open shots and continuously pound the ball, Bell's your guy. This is clearly Josh White's team to lead. Unfortunately for him, he is having to score more, as a true point guard, because Bell's is a liability when they both are on the court. Dennis, however, is a scorer who needs starter minutes. Having seen the kid several times in HS, I was elated that he landed back in N. Texas. He has not been a disapointment.

Dennis & White are the best guard tandem on this team. JJ, like most coaches, will not bench their senior who had a hand in last year's title run. I like my starting five against any other that someone would like to propose. (3 assists and all)

He also has the most turnovers on the team.

Gray, most point guards lead the team in turnovers! (or at least the player who has the ball the most) Look at the stats in any NBA game. I believe Steve Nash leads the entire league, followed by Jason Kidd.

Sure its difficult, but certainly not impossible. And don't misunderstand what I'm saying...I think both Collin and Tristan need to be playing more...Collin at 18 and Tristan at 20 minutes per game at this point is well under where I would like them to be. But your starting line-up isn't just your top five scorers. Ben Bell is the only player on the team who is actually distributing the ball thus far...he has twice as many assists as anybody else on the team...and this is coming from being asked to play the 2. I did get the chance to watch the OSU and ISU games...and Bell was being run of the high screen in the 1-4 offense the same way I watched Hopkins, Watson and K.D....JJ is trying to make Bell a scorer, perhaps to try and harness the flashes Bell showed in the SBC tourney or perhaps to get Josh on the ball, I'm not sure...but as I stated Ben's shots are up significantly from last season and its not where he's best suited.

And like I mentioned previous, your starting line-up isn't just a collection of your five leading scorers...as it stands now with Dennis coming off the bench we have a deep team...without his scoring ability depth has gone from a luxury to a liability...who scores off the bench? Dez and Adam have struggled the same way Ben has...Harold and Kedrick aren't scorers. When Dennis checks in he knows his role...score the basketball...and that kind of punch off the bench is vital to maintaining consistant scoring throughout the game. Ben's also your best perimeter defender...he will be the best option Weds. on D.J. Augustine and later in the year on the likes of Bo McCalebb, Adrian Banks and Daon Merritt. Now, the last 5-8 minutes of a game are a completely different story...if Dennis, White and TT are scoring then Ben Bell's role is cheerleader.

Ben will be a big key to this team sustaining success throughout this season...theres no doubt that so far he has been a disappointment, but I don't believe he's being properly utilized
