EXCELLENT POST AND INSIGHT.

UNTphd: the team did not give up.

GrandGreen: you are clueless if you can see the future.

MG61: if we ran Dickey Ball our "d" would have probably be ranked above 80 (or whatever) but we would still be 2-10. would you rather be 2-10 with the 119th "D" in the country or 2-10 with the 60th best "D" in the country?? dude, 2-10 is 2-10 no matter how you slice it.

Imissbooger: Hurt recruiting???? IMB, have you read the paper lately or looked at scouts dot com or some of the other recruiting rags on who Coach Dodge and the staff are bringing in??? To me who TD is bringing in this early is a VIRTUAL PLETHORA and CORNICOPIA OF TALENT!!! and....imho....much better than what Coach Dickey recruited.....and.....imho, again, it will only get better.

Lifer: as much as i agree with you most of the time i have to disagree with you now........Special Teams, Interceptions and Poor Defensive Back play lost more games for us this year.....not Coach Mendoza.....like i said before we could have beat SMU if it were not for the interceptions (one back for a td), we could have beat fau if it were not for the 2 blocked punts near our endzone.....that was 14 points for fau in a 30-20 loss for us......fiu....well, 2 more INT's, one run back for a td, our db's allowing receivers to get behind them again and losing them in the endzone......the schemes are right we just dont have the horses.

rcade: would you rather be 2-10 under Coach Dickey or 2-10 under Coach Dodge????? I trust the enthusiasm of TD and is, at least, 10 or 20 times the recruiter than Coach Dickey. I truely think that Coach Dickey produced 100% of his talent in endeavoring what he could accomplish at UNT but I would rather have 100% of Coach Dodge's talent anyday.....rcade, double the strength of your coffee.

STE: UNT is not UT or OU.....coach mendoza's schemes dont appeared to be flawed as much as the lethargic nature of our DB's. These guys are slow. you can have the best schemes but if you dont have the horses then ..... well you know 2-10. You also have to give some credit to our "special teams" and the amount of INT's that were thrown this year by both of our qb's putting more pressure on our defense. You just want to lump all the failure on one person which does not make sense......spread the love around dude......give some to the offense and special teams.

What is your connection to this guy?

There is no doubt that the team as a whole made way too many mistakes this year. However, the defense went from 60th to 119th. Are you not willing to blame any of that on the defensive coaching? OU’s coaches were willing to do so.

You say our cornerbacks are lethargic – ok well then how about playing less aggressive and implementing schemes designed to help them and not exposing them?

As I stated previously

. . . . . . . I heard the guys on “College Game Day” say a few weeks ago that when Brent Venables and Bobby Jack Wright came to Oklahoma in 99 they were totally unprepared for some of the pro style offenses that they starting facing at that time. I’m paraphrasing but the Game Day crew said Stoops had to send them to educated quickly. Perhaps others watching the program can remember more.

Any way, I mention this because if this can be the case with Venables coming from a successful K-State team and Wright coming from Texas – then it can sure be the case with Mendoza coming from SLC. Fortunately for the Sooners, they were able to pick up on the complex offensive schemes quickly and adjust their defenses accordingly. Can Mendoza do the same? Is this even the right place for him to learn? I assume Mendoza has other assets to offer the team such as recruiting ability. If so, and assuming Dodge wants to keep Mendoza, I hope he will appoint a Co-Defensive Coordinator who can mentor him.

If Stoops had this problem with Veneables then then the same could be true with Dodge and Mendoza. At least consider the possiblity.

Dumb question. I'd rather be 4-8 or 5-7 under Coach Dodge, which is what North Texas would have been with an average defense.

GMG1999: show me one opposition message board that does not disrespect the opposition!!

My point was that on any given saturday, most if not all of the message boards have the majority of their posts negative when they lose, and they still finish high in recruiting.

Question for you - if this DC is not really responsible for this season, what do you at the end of next season if we only have 2 - 3 wins - do you make a change then?

Posted

Y'all should live in Florida. You have no idea how hard these fans are on the Florida Gators, or what they were like when Ron Zook was head coach.

I have explaned my reasons for wanting him reassigned to a different position on this defense several times, and by saying that, I feel I am putting the responsibility on Dodge. It is his team, and by taking responsibility for it he is moving an underperforming piece to a position that he should be able to excell at. That to me is taking responsibility.

the Peter Principal states that "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." Maybe RM has risen just past his, for the time being anyway. He needs to take a step back and then try again.

Dont' you understand that Dodge controls all aspects of his coaching staff. You are blaming the DC for the defense ,ALL RESPONSIBILITY FALLS ON THE HEAD COACH. And to answer your question, YES, this fan board is far more negative than any other fan board. At the end of the game when we all knew we were going to lose Dodge did not put all the Seniors in to finish the game, that was classless. These guys have played their hearts out for this program and all they get is bashing and negative remarks from their coaching staff. It is easy to blame the players but the reality is the coaches are in over their heads but their egos will never let them admit it and you guys have bought into their hype and brainwashing. You guys have bought that hook, line and sinker. This coaching staff could have taken them to a conference championship game with the talent on this team, they could have done it. He wanted to utilize his high school game plans with his freshman recruits. The veteran players on offense and defense know more about playing Sunbelt teams than the coaching staff, but they did not want to listen to any input from those players, so here we are. Get ready for next year boys because it isn't going to get any better because the attitude of the coaches isn't going to change. Every news writer said we were Southlake Carroll, well we are and a high school team will NEVER beat a college team. We needed a college coach with college experience and we did not get that, so here we go.

quote name='yyz28' date='Dec 2 2007, 12:03 AM' post='320573']uesFirst, this board is no more negative than any other fanboard devoted to schools we recruit against, so no dice there.

How long are we going to allow him to "grow" into a DC? Young people can wait it out- older alums need solutions now! If we do "wait it out", then please have Plummer write out one of his epistles regarding our new, top 25 defense, headed by our current DC, and recite it at my graveside after I'm gone.

Chasin' Green Rabbits & Other Things...

Well, to be Top 25 I do believe the offense and defense can't be too far apart, now can they?

Phil, it's been so damn long since North Texas has had a significat win over a truly major D1 program that we have some posters already (typically) waving white flags and attempting to sell whoever reads all this stuff all the wonderful virtues of being in a a conference with Texas "freakin" State (and just how "so fine" that would be).:lol::( FWIW, do some of them even remember that we actually were once in a conference with those vaunted Bobcats already? Such Glory Days those days were, eh? <_< Or maybe the Bobcats just slipped a fast one by a few of them and they forgot that Texas State U was once actually once called, uh, Southwest Texas State Teacher's College? Sometimes I suppose dimensia can be a good thing and with our multi-decade Mean Green roller coaster ride, it has more than come in handy a few times for yours truly. For such a long time, I felt so sorry for NT alums/Mean Green fans who could only hold on as their high Mean Green water mark a near win over a "4 wins only in 1988" UT Longhorn football team. Then I think how over a similar era how La Tech was winning some "truly" big games over schools that we were told were "Body Bag" games for most of the last 2 decades.

YET..............losing at North Texas creates some of the most interesting 'quick fix" solutions to our problems in what I would be sure would be all of NCAA D1-A. Unfortunately, decades of NT alums not demanding a better product (and laughing at those who did) has now got us in a real pickle pre-hiring of Todd Dodge. To the many of us who have watched too many schools pass ours while we fiddled around in Denton (and doing what all that time--who could ever say or who would have the balls to say may be more like it); yet, all that happening in our past is not what many of just don't want to see happen much more any longer truth be known. (Even Rick V said one time that Southern Miss back before they were one of the schools who passed us were even trying to emulate what some Mean Green HFC originally from Odessa, Texas, had started in Denton back in the 1970's--days that almost now seem like a fiction novel the longer away from those years we get.

I feel sorry for Todd Dodge right now (nice income and all), but (like both of our Mean Green Radio Network fellers said on their post-game radio comments last night) I, too, think Todd Dodge is still the best man for what at this moment may be one of the truly crappiest jobs in NCAA D1-A. Want proof of all the crappiness? Check out some solutions for our present (actually hardly new) problems as presented by a hardy handful of posters on GMG.com who will (I'll swear to it) be first in line to pat Todd Dodge on the back when he turns this damn thing around and that sooner than later. We've seen all this before and we'll see it again with the usual Negative Neds who jump off the bandwagon at the drop of a hat and start telling us how NCAA 1-AAAAAAAA would best fit our future.

I think most university leaders, BOR's and AD's do give any HFC the full cycle, ie, 4-5 years, to get what they inherited turned around and on a positive path. Dickey's first above .500 season was in Year 5 which I think many have suddenly forgotten.

And what the heck, if Todd Dodge does not have this turned around at an acceptable level in 5 years, then he will have, too, served his time in Denton, but like SUMG's signature says, let's sign him up for a few more years with a new contract because looking well beyond the moment and my nose and the feelings of the moment, I think we'd eventually be glad we did such and....................also, hike up the fee for any school who wants to sign him away from UNT so we give his successor a good first and second (maybe 3'rd) year salary that Big Time U would have had to shell out to get T'odge.

Again, I personally gave DD Ball 7 years of fan support and even posted such during those years, and you know what, I think I will just go ahead and give Todd Dodge his deserved due, too, although I think we will start showing program momentun and progress in Year 3 from this Mean Green HFC.

I don't know what his record was during his first year at Iowa. But in his first year at North Texas he was 5-5-1 and we were co-champions of the MVC. I'd take that in a heartbeat for this years team.

And BTW. When Hayden Fry came to North Texas he retained the DC from the previous year....Bill Brasher.

The rest, as they say, was history.

I am as disappointed as you about losing to FIU, and the way this season has gone. I still have faith in Todd Dodge and have seen the changes he has and will be making between now and next season. A MAJOR KEY to our success next year is the recruitment of quality players between now and February.

I am proud of our current players. One positive is that our players have never once gave up...they were fighting till the end of every game. I still have faith that Todd Dodge and our coaches will turn this team around..

I'm ashamed of some go mean green posters. Yes, every poster has "freedom of speach" But these posters have said the same thing time.................after time...................after time................Fire our Defensive coordinator. I guess now we will hear fire the special teams coach and even fire everyone and get a new head coach. If we were to do this.....I guarantee you no quality coach will come to NT if we don't give a NEW HC more than one year to turn a losing team into a winning team.

I believe each of these posters are honorable people and all but ONE are true NT suporters.

I believe each of you (except one) would not intentionally hurt our current players nor the NT recruiting efforts to recruit quality players. BUT, IMHO that is what you are doing ......by your repeated calls to fire coaches. IF you don't already know...........our current players, prospective players, the family and friends of prospective players read our board postings.

After reading your posts do you really believe our coaches will be able to recruit "good quality" defensive players.....you don't believe the opposing team coaches won't tell them what is being posted...that the coach recruiting them won't be at NT next year..

Well I gues I have exercised my freedom of speech so you are free to "hit" me for doing so. All I ask is that you justify to yourself and us that your posts will not hurt NT recruiting.

What is wrong with the truth.... we had a very bad year.... A pig with lipstick is still a pig..... Let just be honest about the situation.... I doubt this season met anyones expectations..... To say other otherwise sounds like some politicians we currently have.

I may be older than you... who knows... I am definitely no new grad and have claimed NT as my school 40+ years. After the season we just had, I doubt anything we say will have any impact on recruiting..... good or bad.

I think the board itself has very little direct impact on recruits, but it has been proven that several of the local reporters dig through the board for stories and feeling of the Mean Green Nation. Whenever it makes the papers that Dodge and staff have falling support after the first season because we have no patience as fans, that may do some damage I don't know.

Posted

Can you fell me in on what OU coaches said when we played them. I didn't read it in our local newspaper.

With all due respect OT, I hope we sign a load of defensive talent. BUT, I don't expect true freshmen to come in and lead this team, and I don't know of top defensive talent that would look at our DC and be excited about playing his schemes.

It was an embarrassment to have OU coaches laughing about us at the start of the year, and I thought that would create a sense of urgency to adjust his system to our players. Didn't happen and giving up 40+ to FIU just shows the lack of adjustments he made and how over matched he is in the D1 game. I have nothing personal against the man, but this was a bad hire.

Posted

My thoughts. First, on the FIU game. Vizza did not have his normal game.

His missed Dibrell two or three times wide open for sure TD's. Missed

Stickler two times for TD's. Jamario broke a run for 20 yards, that should have

been a long TD run, one man to beat, missed his cut and was caught. The

point is, NT had their chances to break the will of FIU, and bury these guys.

Give credit to FIU, they wanted this game more, made the plays, and won.

Second, the future of North Texas.

Dodgeball was very impressive at times, and would foul up at the wrong times.

None the less, I am very impressed with the young offense, and I see great

times ahead. I was very impressed with the way the offense could move the chains,

keep the drives alive, and could score on any play. I like it!

Defense, needs some work. I will just say, it is not all the DC's fault NT lost

several close games.

Recruiting is going to be the key. Players sign on with schools because of the

coaching staff. Coach Dodge will bring the players in. I believe Coach Dodge

will be successful, and he will turn North Texas into a preimer winning program.

Coach Dodge is the right man for this job!

I hope that Mendoza has learned from this season and will show us something good next fall and that the current players come together with the new recruits and give us all something incredible to cheer for.

Please rank the following, from most likely to hurt recruiting to least likely to hurt recruiting:

* Having the 119th ranked scoring defense out of 119 teams

* Ending up with a 2-10 record

* Being the last-place team in the worst conference in I-A

* Giving up 74 points in a single game

* Having a fan message board with negative comments about a coach

If you had your way and we pretended Dodge's first year wasn't a colossal embarrassment, do you really think recruiting would be better? Student athletes aren't idiots. They would know things were bad in 2007 without us telling them.

I gotta say it's less of an embarrassment than when we also had 2 wins in Dickey's, what, 9th season?

For me, it's not just the losses but the way we lost them. Troy beat us like a paycheck game, and against FIU we weren't even competitive. I expected to lose a lot of games in Dodge's first season, but not to get stomped so often.

But that's all in the distant past now. It's all green and it's all good.

You must be a BIG OU FAN, all your information and quotes are OU based.

I can't stand OU/UT or most of the other big boys. I'm just a fan of college football and watch as many of the pre/post games shows and games as my wife/kids/work will allow. I love UNT and always root for the non-bsc schools in games where North Texas isn't playing.
