People act like there were no behind the scenes problems on the Defense, but obviously there was. If that is out of control then it makes coaching near impossible. Dodge should know and be able to measure this, I believe he will make the right choice.

distractions are part of the game...the distraction has nothing to do with the lack of defensive performance. Next year will prove what this guy has as a DC at the college DI level. I know this is getting old but true. Good luck seniors!

I think you are letting Todd Dodge off way too easily when it comes to the failures of our defense. The head coach is responsible for all phases of the game - offense, defense, and the kicking game. Coordinators prepare a game plan for an opponent and go over it with the head coach. The head coach either approves it or sends it back for corrections until the coordinator comes up with something he can approve. Todd Dodge is as responsible for our failures on defense as the defensive coordinator. He is the head coach and is the man who is responsible for the defensive coordinator being in that position. Our failures are his as well as Coach Mendoza's.

I would disagree when taking over a group that were not used to discipline and how many may have resented having rules all of the sudden, that may be more then just a distraction. But I do agree that next year will prove what Mendoza has to offer.

Well, first, we don't know how this staff is built and how the "who's responsible for what" accountability scenario - you can't say for sure that Dodge spends much time on building defensive schemes or even approving them.

...however, part of what you say here has merit. Dodge is responsible for the hire. He CAN see that the same schemes that have been run week after week aren't working. He was critiqued, rightfully so as it is turning out, for not keeping our DC with a proven track record, or getting some D1 level coaching talent to help flatten the learning curve.

Now that the season is over, I am looking to Coach Dodge to make changes that are the best for this team. He can't look at what has happened this season and not realize that he needs to make some changes, maybe bring in some D1 coaching talent. That's what I'm looking at Dodge to do. His failure to do so will be a black mark as far as a huge portion of the fanbase is concerned.

If '08 is another defensive disaster because TD sticks with Mendoza and he doesn't cut it, believe he'll need water wings because walking on water just won't be happening.

---I agree with you if you are talking about keeping him a second season....but only partially for the first season. It takes one season to realize the DC wasn't ready for college football. Dodge will be held responsible if no changes are made for year two.. Mendoza "may" be a decent defensive co-ordinator but the season indicates otherwise... especailly since he had so much talent returning. The head coach can only do so much especially the first season when there are so many areas to address and even more so since the offense was making drastic changes from what had existed in the past .

---This is pure speculation but I feel the coaching staff by promoting sophmore/freshman over seniors lost a lot of leadership and hurt morale. It makes sense if the freshman is "obviously" much better but not otherwise. Give them playing time but not starting roles. Very few of you would accept a " rookie kid" as your supervisior or boss if you had been there several years and paid your dues and felt you were as qualified as the new guy. Team morale is extremely important especially in football. This may not show from the stands but I am sure it does in the lockerroom. I am sure a lot of seniors viewed it as a lost year and thought they had been swept aside as part of the "old DD group"...

      I understand that his decisions to go for it on 4th down so much or not to kick FGs or play the field position game are bad decisions. Just playing Devil's advocate. Could it be that those decisions stem from a lack of confidence in the defense? It feels like he believes he has to score TDs on every possession to win because the defense will not stop anyone. So, that takes me back to he should have never kept Caponi after year one.

      I went to the game, again we started slow and accelerated in the second quarter outscoring ACU 27-12. We let them back in it and the lead got down to three points twice. But we went on a game-sealing 11-0 run to take a 66-52 lead as Lampkin took over. One of ACU's starting bigs went out late with an apparent back injury. She's from Bixby, Oklahoma, which is where I've gotten my only speeding ticket, so maybe she deserved it. As for the arena, it shares the same name as SMU's (Moody Coliseum) and looks like a carbon copy of TCU's (albeit half the size). Recently renovated and very nice. The ACU men hosted TXST shortly after. Which we could get some better men's/women's doubleheaders and on the weekend to help boost the ladies' attendance.
