**************WARNING***************** If you are watching the game on tape delay and don't want to know how it unfolded stop reading now.

Ok, so Rodge went down in the first half and the Southlake offense was clearly not the same. SLC goes into the locker room with the lead 14-9.

Both teams come out of the tunnel looking pretty good in the 2nd half and here's where it gets interesting.

Up 21-15 Southlake gives the ball to Tre Newton. Newton runs toward the sideline and, while fighting for extra yards, fumbles. Abilene turns this turnover into 7 points and takes a 22-21 lead. Both teams have a possession and then Abilene gets the ball back.

This is where Hal Wasson begins to lose the game for Southlake(I'll number the mistakes)...though Abilene did everything in their power to not let him

Abilene faces 4th and 7 or so at just past midfield. The line up in a shotgun and I turned to Rudy and said "Pooch kick" Sure enough Abilene pooch punts the ball to the 5. But wait! The play clock had expired so there is a delay of game penalty. Abilene comes back out 4th and 12 and lines up in the shotgun...SLC has gotta put somebody back for the pooch kick, right? (1)Wrong. Abilene pooch kicks and the ball dies inside the 5.

SLC lines up under center with 2:58 remaining and on first down Padron (backup QB, and yes Justin's brother) slips and falls down on the 1 yard line!!! But an Abilene player hits him late and gives him 15 free yards.

SLC throws a couple dinks and dunks moving the clock down to about :58. Then Southlake runs (2)A QB DRAW! They call a timeout and then complete an out to about the Abilene 32. Clock is stopped and an Abilene player hits him late out of bounds!

15 free yards and a couple plays later Southlake is on the 12 with at or around 10 seconds to play. We're talking about it and Rudy and I say to eachother "cool, call the timeout and kick the field goal" because SLC had one timeout left. (3)Instead SLC lines up under center, I can only assume to try to spike the ball, and fumbles the exchange. Abilene recovers and ices the win.

If you had no vested interest in the game it was a great one.

Now, as to another issue. I talked with several SLC fans who agreed that you don't turn the nation's 65th ranked defense into the nation's dead last defense and have it be a talent issue...no matter how much Mendoza may be talking this angle up in Southlake. <_<

What happened to Riley? ***never mind, saw you posted it on another thread***

i agree emmitt. wasson made some really bad decisions in the last few minutes of the game and it started with not putting anyone back on that 4 and 12 to catch the pooch kick. i could understand on 4th and 7. i think that everyone knew that the pooch kick was coming on the first 4th down but if Abilene got a first down there, the game was pretty much over so I could understand him not putting anyone back. i felt bad for Riley. it was a pretty heartbreaking game for SLC, regardless of how many state championships that they have won. i didn't jump on the southlake bandwagon until I watched them play in person and in my opinion was one of the classiest teams that I have ever seen. glad to have riley and other southlake players at North Texas...

Then, as you mentioned, SLC tries to Belichick it up and get the TD despite having a timeout left.

hahahahahhahahahahahahahahah i forget about some of the football minded folks that we have on this board. you really think that SLC was trying to score a touchdown?? i don't neccessarily agree with him trying to snap it and down the ball but for you to even hint that SLC was trying to run up the score is not only absurd, it makes no sense. i think it was pretty obvious that you had a rooting intrest in this game... it's ok to be happy that SLC lost but tell it how it actually was

They were moving the ball at will. SLC tried to spike the ball to stop the clock and get some more plays in. A team with 13 seconds left content for a field goal would use a running play up the middle, wait for the clock to tick down to nothing and use that final timeout.

They were trying to score and that's exactly the right call, IMO. Just a unfortunate turn of events. I only saw the last two minutes of the game. Congrats to Abilene.

Just watched the replay. On the personal foul call at the end that put SLC on the Abilene 10, the SLC player looked just like he incidentally bumped into the AHS player as he was running back onto the field after catching the ball and going out of bounds. And as he does he looked like he was just giving the kid a "good play" tap on the shouder and the AHS kid shoved him?

On the fumble, just as Emmit described but unfortunately the film crew misses it on the replay and you never really see a good up close view of it. But why in hell did they try a play under center when they hardly ever do? Just call the timeout and kick the winning field goal? Strange.

IF there are no changes in this defense, which there appears to be none planned, it will be another long year next year.
