Report: Williams has torn chest muscle, out for season

The Miami Dolphins running back, who was reinstated last month after a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, suffered a torn chest muscle in the Dolphins' 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing an unnamed source.

The injury apparently happened when Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons, pursuing a Williams fumble, stepped on Williams' right shoulder blade.

"It's just sad," Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, told the Post. "As hard as he's worked. He worked so hard physically to get back into shape and in therapy. He worked so hard for that moment and to have it end this way is sad."

The Post reported the Dolphins were not available for comment Tuesday afternoon.

In a sloppy Monday night game reminiscent of the Red Grange days of the NFL, the Dolphins running back depth chart was wiped out by injuries. Starter Jesse Chatman, already ailing from a sprained ankle, suffered a neck injury after absorbing a wicked shot from safety Anthony Smith. His status for the upcoming week is currently unknown. Meanwhile, in his highly anticipated return, Ricky Williams exited stage left in the second half with a pectoral injury. He's reportedly out for the season. With the status of Chatman and Williams clouded, Patrick Cobbs has an outside shot of vaulting into the starting lineup this week against a pliable Jets front line. The second-year back out of North Texas is a diminutive rusher who exudes excellent patience, vision and versatility. In a system designed to involve backs in the passing game, Cobbs would be a sound source of receptions and yardage in Week 13. The Puddle Jumpers have yielded 187.3 total yards per game and the fourth-most fantasy points to backs since Week 9. The Miami offensive line has played commendably this year and will have little difficulty creating lanes for Cobbs, or whoever, to run through. Cobbs, available in 99.9 percent of Y! leagues, is worth a speculative pickup in all 12-team leagues.

Suggestion to the Dolphins on playing Patrick Cobbs: why not? What have you got to lose that you haven't already lost again and again and again this year? Give the kid a try and see what he can do.

What if he had started last night....and played most of the game? He would have had some lousy stats, playing in that muck. And Doper Boy wouldn't have been hurt....and would probably be starting this week (on a better field).

Now, if Patrick starts.......and it's on a good dry field......he can show what he can do.

They showed last night they would start a gimpy player or a former druggie who hadn't taken an NFL hit in two years before they would think about Cobbs, no wonder this team has not won a game. The only thing I can think of is that they were relying heavily on Cobbs for Special Teams and did have someone else to learn the position.

Plus....not sure what time that NFL teams have to be in...on the night before a game....but PC might can make it out to see the Mean Green play.

There are lots of reasons the Dolphins are bad, but not starting Cobbs is probably far down on that list.

No QB.

Weak offensive line.

No run defense.

Horrible special teams.

All the poorer aspects of their team aside, their unwillingness to put in Cobbs (yes, he is/was 3rd string) just to see what he can do when they were 0-10 tells me something about their attitude towards trying to win games. Were they really going to put all their eggs in one basket with getting Ricky Williams back? Especially with Chatman being injured previously?

I wish I could say the same, but I can't. The NFL was a better game before habitual dopeheads got chance after chance to clean themselves up so they can make millions. I'm glad to see hard working kids like PC get the opportunity they have worked their a$$es off to earn.

I can't feel anything for people who have a wonderful gift and throw it away for drugs... even a harmless one like pot.

I especially feel nothing for people who consistently let down those who depend on them.
