Big blow to Baylor search

Baylor's football coaching search just received the boxing equivalent of a standing eight count when former Bears' standout Mike Singletary took his name out of consideration on Wednesday night. Not only was Singletary the runaway choice among the majority of Baylor loyalists, he was the only candidate capable of uniting a fractured fan base. Regardless of where AD Ian McCaw turns now, he'll be hard-pressed to land a candidate who will get the unanimous support among regents and key boosters that Singletary would have received.

To his credit, Singletary -- a class act and a straight shooter -- did not belabor the process once he made the decision that he'd rather make his coaching mark in the NFL. He got out quickly, thereby allowing Baylor officials to move on to other candidates ASAP.

But if I'm a Baylor fan, I'm troubled this morning by what Singletary told S-T colleague Dwain Price in today's editions. Singletary said he told McCaw: "If you're talking a national championship ... then I want to talk to you. If you're talking just competing, I don't want to be part of that."

Unless Singletary is doing some negotiating through the media, trying to shake loose a larger commitment from Baylor folks in regard to facilities and coaches' salaries before "rethinking" his position and resurfacing as a candidate, that's a troubling comment. That does not strike me as Singletary's style. Instead, he's telling everyone that Baylor -- a year removed from a victory over a Kansas team that remains in contention for the 2007 national championship -- lacks the commitment at the highest levels of administration to play with the big boys in the Big 12.

That message will resonate with other candidates as well, making this a tougher job to sell today than it was before Singletary turned it down. If Singletary truly is out of the picture, as I suspect, it just became tougher to convince Houston Nutt that he should be interested in working in Waco once he becomes available at the end of Arkansas' season.

 has anyone really looked at Kansas' schedule this year to see who they beat?

Baylor remains the Smut of the Big12. The privates just need to join together in their own conference and pillowfight amongst themselves for a Bowl. :P

The media isn't feeding the full story. I find it hilarious that an asshole like Singletary is referred to as a "class act" by espn.com. Singletary wanted to bring 2 assistants and asked for $30+ mil, and he's a friggin' position coach.

Do you have a source on that?

No one in their right mind would expect a 30 million salary from Baylor. You must've misinterpreted/misread something.

You/I/everyone here should kill to be in that conference with the privates and pillowfight for a bowl.

I absolutely LOVE how everyone continues to knock Kansas for their schedule. How many of these games did the Kansas players schedule? Or, better yet, name a BCS team that is ranked below them that had the chance to prove themselves and didn't blow it.

UT- Losses to K-state and Oklahoma

OU- Losses to Colorado and TECH

Florida- Losses to Auburn, LSU and Georgia

Ohio State- Lost to ILLINOIS

Va Tech- LSU and BC

BC- Losses to Florida State and Maryland

KU is the only BCS school to simply do what you ask of any team when they take the field...beat the team placed in front of you. So, yes, millions have taken a look at Kansas' schedule to see who they beat...everyone.

I thought it was interesting that if OU hadn't blown it against Tech, then Kansas would be playing two BCS top-5 teams in a row just to get to the championship game. Talk about rough...

Say what you want about their schedule up to this point, but I think we'd all agree they have quite the road in front of them. And they have certainly earned the right to be where they are. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Until they lost to the Red Raiders, I was going to say "Don't count OU out of this yet"...they did beat Mizzou.

What if Mizzou wins, then gets a rematch with OU? What if they did and win...will they have earned a spot in the BCS NC?

This weekend, starting tonight, is fantastic for any college football fan.

Face it, who cares who scheduled KU's schedule, they lucked into a year where their tough games, Nebraska and A$M, are cupcakes this season. They do not have a national champ caliber schedule. If that's the criteria, no losses, then Hawaii should be ranked #2 with them.

Convenient how you ignored the fact that I stated TWICE that KU is the only BCS team to go unbeaten. You still haven't told me what other BCS team took care of their business...I'll wait.

And you're telling me that if they beat #4 Missouri tomorrow and then Oklahoma, the only team to beat Missouri, that they're undeserving? Lay off of this stuff.

Ok, I'll play...Hawaii. Actually, all 1-A teams are now BCS teams, even NT. KU opened with 4 former non-BcS games. Mizzou had the tougher road playing at OU. If it was reversed and KU played in Norman do you really think they could have beat them there? I think not. Anyway, the dream will soon end for the FakeHawks tomorrow.

While I'm not really disagreeing with you, I'd like to say you're seeming to just play wordsmith to Emmitt (a game I fall into..a lot) rather than counterpoint. I think you know what Emmitt means: Kansas is in a conference that has automatic tie-ins to the major BCS bowls. Regarding the schedule: I'm sure both of you would agree that the non-conference slate is ridiculously cake, but you can't seriously think Hawaii's WAC schedule could hold a candle to what Kansas had to do, right?

Hawaii is currently leading against a very mentally tough Boise State squad right now. Kansas has a 3 game playoff beginning tomorrow night. They aren't spectacular by any means, but they have answered every question thrown at them this year and don't seem to have any weakness.

I still want to see Mizzou win out: over the Jayhawks and then a win in a Sooner rematch for the Big XII title. The Tiger faithful would be SCREAMING for a shot at the BCS title. Would they deserve it? I speculate if that happened, they'd be left out in favor of a West Virginia - Ohio State championship. Big Ten fans have been too whiney, and voters extend too much sympathy.

First, neither NT nor Hawaii are BCS teams. BCS teams play in conferences that have automatic bids into the BCS process. At Large possibilities don't make you a BCS school...

...and the rest of this discussion is acedemic. Missouri WILL win tomorrow night. I'll be hauling home from a cold, wet Fouts to McKinney tomorrow evening to be in my warm house in front of my TV for the game of the weekend!
