just doing my usual bit of going on every board of the team we're playing for the week. i gotta say guys that was one helluva game against navy, i couldn't believe what was reading across the ESPN game tracker on the internet. how's the teams spirit? i hope they're not too down after saturday's lost; they played hard and hung with a rejuvenated Navy squad. I must say I'm looking forward to our game, but this game is going to be bitter sweet because as you all may or may not know this will be the last football game we'll ever be known as the 'Arkansas State Indians' and we're having a special ceremony for the retiring of the Indian Family and mascot.

good luck to both squads

Hello ASU War Chief. Thanks for the compliments/comments on the Navy game. It was an exciting game and a great atmosphere at Fouts Field. Looks like you guys had a good game last week. What is going to be the new mascot?!?

How are people up in Jonesboro feeling about the Mean Green coming to town?

Welcome and thanks for posting.

...and I'm VERY SORRY the political correct BS in this country has created this situation for your school. Schools that use Indians and Native American references as mascots do so as a sign of respect, not as an attempt to piss on anyone's Cherrios, and I think it is a very sad commentary that people in this country can't seem to solve basic service issues like education and the mail system, but we can spend the crap out of your tax dollars to attack an Honorable Institution like ASU because someone sent in a letter bitching about their mascot.

...and how 'bout them Seminoles?!?!?! Notice the big $$ School in Florida isn't having to take it up the rear end on this issue? This makes the second Sunbelt team who had to chance, but the BCS school can keep on keepin' on.

Puke-Ola.

...Damn, its just a rant a minute this morning...

The Indians are always a tough opponent.

So they have the 41st best rushing offense in the country.

By my calculations, Navy had the #1 rushing attack and put up over 550 yards. The #41 rushing attack should only up up 400 yards...OH BOY!

Sounds like they can at least contain our offense somewhat...but who knows.

Well, then Vizza should only have to pitch a perfect game and score about 70 points to win. Man, this offense is GOING to have to improve, I don't think we're headed in the right direction here, lord knows the defense is doing all it can... **<-- This is Sarcasm. Please look up the word in the dictionary before flaming my post. :)

My sentiments too. What a sad commentary when universities have to change mascots and sports names for the sake of a few idiots. Why can't stuff like this be put up for a vote in the states where they occur? Sad, sad.

thanks for the warm welcome guys-i've always thought north texas people are the classiest of the belt. the FAU loss really shot down our morale but i think our guys will put a solid effort for the last home game. everyone here in the boro is all caught up in the mascot debacle really-we've already had 3 mascot forums for students and faculty and another one is being held today. as for what we're going to be, we won't offically know until spring of 08. we have a very complicated mascot selection process right now; we have about 8-9 little sub committees that take suggestions from the ASTATE.EDU website and narrows it down to their top 10. somehow (i dunno how exactly) we're suppose to have it narrowed down to three mascots, in which case a marketing firm from New York will take the top three and give us their potiential marketing ideas and from their a official mascot selection board will make the final decision. Right now, 'Red Wolves' is the leading all the subcommittee's top 10 and from the looks of it will probably be that or some wolf theme.

Chief,

We're not looking forward to seeing Tyrell Johnson and Khayyam Burns. Or, Montis Harrison, for that matter. I feel as though we're about to enter Interception City Thursday with those guys. Other than those three, how do you expect your defense to perform against the spread.

TFLF

to be honest i'm not looking forward for us to defend any passing attack at all. FAU just tore our secondary apart last week in the heart breaking loss, and although guys are real highly tuned athletes it just seems like they have their up and down games. monty often gets burned because he likes to step up to the line and try to instantly slow down and deter whoever he is defending. tyrell and khayyam will be flying all over the field making tackles left and right. i will say if you throw the ball up in the air for grab, i would suspect interception city but most teams focus the pass away from those two guy with quick outs and i expect todd dodge to do the same. i will say if this turns into a shootout, i think i'll give you guys the upperhand. our offense is still sputtering too much and is just so damn inconsitent its not even funny-our offensive coordinator is just awful and i suspect we're dropping him at the end of the season.

Sounds like an energy drink.

Wait a minute...I am an animal rights proponent to the hilt and "Red Wolves" offends me greatly. It is making trivial of a great species of animal, and I for one object. Where can I send my letter of complaint? <_<

Personally, I'm glad the Sun Belt schools that have these mascots are changing them. Chief Wahoo is not respectful. The name Redskins is an ethnic slur. More innocuous names like "Indians" lend themselves to "Scalp the Indians!" and other derogatory use by the fans of opposing teams.

yeah and who are we to say whether or not the color green is in fact "mean".

Let's install padded walls in every aspect of society so that nobody's feelings get hurt.

If your offense is sputtering, then you've come to the right defense or should I say the right defensive coordinator, he's been known to revive offenses before.

Would you sneer at this issue if we were talking about the Washington Wetbacks of the NFL and the Cleveland Mexicans? It seems ridiculous to me that we're willing to tolerate a racist Sambo character like Chief Wahoo -- displayed prominently in the World Series on the caps, dugouts and other gear of the Indians -- years and years after blackface pantomime and characters like Amos n' Andy were drummed out of pop culture. What reason can be possibly sufficient to explain why Native Americans are singled out for this treatment?

How about having them wear Apu on their hats or a big red dot. The only Indians that ever existed are from the large country south of the Himalayas. Other viable alternatives that would make true sense would be the Washington Dullards, and the Cleveland Armpits.

if you're gonna go with that argument, you might as well say that notre dame can't be the fighting irish because that is stereotyping that all irish love to fight. also are you saying that any sport organization can be anything they wanna be (cowboys, boilermakers, blue or red raiders, commodores, cornhuskers, rebels etc) so long as they're white people and not black, mexican, asian, japanese, spanish, native american and so on? either way it's all alright and it's not alright you can't have it a little bit of both because then your symbolizing that white people can be 'poked fun of' but not the 'other people' because they can't handle it or we'll hurt their feelings. i'm sure that if the San Fransisco 49ers had a mascot, Willy the Miner for example, and he came out to entertain the fans, and he was goofy and bumbling around, looking for gold in people's pockets and hats, you would laugh and applaud and be amused....so long as he was white. Any other race and you'd be splattering how 'abusive' and 'hostile' willy the miner is. if any group of people are racist, PC people are.

Huge schools sharing indian name sakes are sometimes the only reminders that we have these days that they ever existed. Instead, the only time we remember they roamed this country before Europeans is by visiting their casinos, and engaging in that "vice".

I think all races and ethnic groups make poor mascots -- especially at public schools. Evidently, the folks on your Mascot Committee agreed with me. I'm surprised, frankly, that they didn't follow the Seminoles here in Florida. We'll never be rid of that junk.

we wouldn't have been able to buy off an entire indian tribe like FSU has.

You've not seen our defense then. I can't say with any amount of confidence we can hang with any team if we're in a shoot out.
