A tidbit to enjoy for Greenie backers

I don't know if I have ever heard from so many mad, miserable and just plain dejected North Texas fans in the wake of the Mean Green's 74-62 loss to Navy on Saturday.

So I thought I would put something on the blog to cheer everyone up in Greenie Land. SMU had an even worse weekend than UNT when one takes into account how both schools' men's basketball teams fared. Everyone probably read that the SMU football team fell to Rice on a last-second field goal, but the Mustangs also lost to Southern and Alabama State in hoops.

Let me repeat that -- Southern and Alabama State.

SMU's setback against Southern was its first season-opening loss at home in 12 years.

The Ponies are supposed to have one of the best recruiting classes the Dallas-area trio of UNT, SMU and TCU has landed in years in men's basketball this season.

I am starting to wonder if UNT might have something to say about that with Josh White, Tristan Thompson and Adam McCoy just to name a few of the Mean Green's newcomers after an impressive win over Cameron in its season opener. Granted, it was only Cameron. UNT will find out if it really is as good as it looked Saturday soon enough, but for now the future looks awfully good for the Mean Green.

UNT's football program and SMU's basketball team will likely be headed in the right direction soon under Todd Dodge and Matt Doherty, respectively

But on a weekend when little seemed to go right for UNT or SMU, Johnny Jones' team certainly gave the Mean Green the edge.

That fact might not soften the blow of UNT's defense looking like road kill in a loss to the Midshipmen, but if I know most Greenie fans, SMU’s troubles are certainly something to smile about on a dismal day.

Emmitt and I went to the 2nd half of the SMU/Alabama State game and jeered. I think the group of 5 fans 2 rows below hated us, since they kept looking up and giving us dagger eyes.
