Has there ever been another season when 3 Texas coaching positions were available at the same time? SMU, A&M, and Baylor will all be up for grabs next year.

O-P-P-O-R-T-U-N-I-T-Y...........is what OldTmer has said such multi-openings could be for UNT this next recruiting season.

Darn shame we haven't announced or shown new stadium blueprints yet, but who knows what the (near) future holds with that, too.

(1) Is Baylor really going to let their guy go for sure?

(2) Is UCLA really that serious about TTech's Leach?

Last year NT, Rice, and Texas State all had openings. Schools in 1-A seem faster these days to make changes even with coaches still under multi-year contracts because of fan pressure, school image, and potential lost revenue. An A$M or Baylor can't risk losing multiple donors and fans at games because of frustration with coaching and losing.

Sources: Morriss won't be back at Baylor

Guy Morriss will not be retained as Baylor's football coach after this season, two high-ranking university sources told The Dallas Morning News.

Morriss brought the Bears back to respectability by leading them to competitive, albeit losing seasons the last two years. But an 18-38 record in five years, plus an inability to lead Baylor to a bowl game, convinced school officials that a change is needed, the sources said.

The Bears (3-7, 0-6 Big 12) have suffered through 12 straight losing seasons. The school hasn't been bowl eligible since 1995.

Morriss, 56, has one year remaining on his contract. Baylor is a private university and does not have to reveal its salary figures, but Morriss is believed to be making $1.2 million annually.

Morriss, who could not be reached Thursday, is expected to coach the final two games of the season. After last Saturday's loss to Texas Tech, Morriss was asked if he was worried about his job status.

"I can't answer that," Morriss said. "I'm focused on trying to get these kids ready to play. All that other stuff is out of my control."

Baylor spokesman Nick Joos said Thursday night that athletic director Ian McCaw would not make a decision on Morriss until after the season. McCaw has said that numerous times this season.

Sources said former Baylor legend Mike Singletary will be among the top candidates to replace Morriss.

Singletary told The News in late October that if the Baylor job became available, he would consider it.

And it may be 4 if the "Leach to UCLA" rumor comes true.

While Nebraska is not "in Texas" they have recruited well in Texas....for instance the Denton DE who committed to them. That would make 3, maybe 4. Hopefully we will sign some of the prospects they were recruiting.

Im not sure a coach leaving a school translates to us grabbing their recruits. Most of the vacancies will be at schools looking to make a "big hire" and reinvigorate the fanbase and program. Whatever new coach they bring in will be selling that opportunity much like Dodge did in the few weeks he had this past year. I guess my point is, our recruiting skyrocketed after firing our coach, no reason to believe SMU and A&M couldn't enjoy the same success- with the right hire.

This post is so "right on" that it deserves repeating.

Wonder how solid his committment to NE will be once their coach is gone at the end of the season.

Could be a Callahan, Nutt, or Fran:

Sources in Dallas tell us SMU is closing in on a hire to replace the deposed Phil Bennett. We are told to expect a “huge” splash. The hiring of either of the two names being mentioned would send shockwaves across Conference-USA. Expect an announcement soon after the Mustangs’ final game of the season. If the choice is who we’re hearing it could be, WOW! SMU will have hit a home run. Hint: The top candidate is at a BCS school with a disenchanted fan base – and it’s not an obvious choice. Athletic Director Stever Orsini has a history of making splash hires. This one figures to be no different. Stay tuned to FootballRumorMill for more on this developing story…

That would be about 90% of all BCS fanbases! :D Basically, any school with more than two losses.

Anyway, here are some long shots based on that sliver of information:

Mike Stoops from Arizona - he didn't come close to panning out.

Ty Willingham - has coached at schools with higher academic standards, hasn't really turned things around at Washington

Ed Orgeron - has done basically nothing at Ole Miss

Greg Robinson - has taken Syracuse from mediocre to just plain bad in three seasons

That about all I can think of who would have "disenchanted" fanbases, based on the respectively schools' histories. Each of those programs has had good success, just not under the current coaches.

Latest speculation---->Tommy Bowden at Clemson.

I've heard Fran's name a lot from local media folks...

If Leach goes to UCLA then the Houston job will be open.

Leach isn't going anywhere. Every year, the same baseless rumors about him leaving for another program never come true. Besides, you couldn't fill one hand with meaningful victories under him at Tech. He's a defensive know-nothing (which UCLA doesn't need) and half-certifiable, too.
