Sorry to be double posting this from an earlier reply to the "Tired head" thread, but thought it might generate more discussion as a separate topic. EagleMBA says this link is interesting and worth some study, so don't just take my word for it. If any of you have any thoughts about this link or anything related to it, such as whether this describes Navy's triple option, if so, which version of it, how can our defense play it as far as schemes, personnel etc....I just thought it might be fun!

Triple option discussed.

I have the Navy-Pitt game recorded. I looked at that article earlier and thought, based on my elementary understanding, that none of those formations look like what Navy runs. In the Pitt game, the backs stay closer to the quarterback, much like what the article refers to as the older way (not verbatim).

Navy looked scary in that game. SO quick, decisive, and disciplined. I'm afraid.

I defer to you, greenminer, since you recorded the game and I did not. My memory was that Navy indeed runs the version of the triple option as described at the beginning of Davie's article and uses the option pass effectively (because they don't do it that often). I struggled to remember their line splits and running back deployment. My overwhelming memory is that they execute the offense perfectly and they are fast as hell.

We get another shot to scope them out Saturday afternoon on TV against ND. I would love to see them win. I will print off Davie's article and compare it to their alignments.

Being a fan of triple option football, I watched the Navy-Delaware game and the Middies are scary with that triple option. They run it out of a variety of sets and sometimes send linemen around as carrier escorts (Navy talk). They can throw the ball and are amazingly good at the quick strike. They are a very good football team on both sides of the ball.

As a former DE and Veer fullback I can tell you the option is all-out scary. You can play your assignment perfectly but if the guy behind you or the up the gut misses his, it's all she wrote.

P.S.

Look for Navy senior fullback Adam Ballard #22. He's listed as being from Lewisville but the broadcasters said he told them that he grew up 10 minutes from the UNT campus.
