Suspended player files complaint of racism

By TROY PHILLIPS

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

DENTON -- University of North Texas officials are investigating allegations of racism made by suspended starting cornerback Dominique Green but have received no cooperation from Green.

Green was suspended indefinitely Sunday by coach Todd Dodge, a day after UNT's 48-28 loss to Middle Tennessee. On Monday, Green filed a complaint with the Texas chapter of the NAACP, citing racial bias by UNT coaches.

Green, though, has no complaint filed with the university's office of equity and diversity, which handles such allegations.

"Currently, we have no such complaint," said Gilda Garcia, UNT vice president/equity and diversity. "We need to talk with Mr. Green. We have not found Mr. Green yet. I don't know the exact nature of his allegations."

Green was benched Saturday after not following an on-field directive, going for an interception instead of staying in coverage as instructed. Middle Tennessee scored a 51-yard touchdown on the play.

Green then argued with teammates and was later confronted by UNT receivers coach Clayton George for excessive foul language, Dodge said. George told Green to stop, but he refused. After meeting Sunday with Dodge, Green was suspended indefinitely.

"I was offended and my coaches were offended by the undertones [of Green's allegations]," Dodge said. "People who know me or my staff know that's not the way we are. Sometimes perception is reality, and that hurts."

Green did not play in UNT's first two games for disciplinary reasons, Dodge said.

UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said he plans to interview players and coaches about what led to Green's suspension and allegations.

"Knowing coach Dodge," Villarreal said, "I find that hard to believe."

Garcia said she expected "some interaction" between UNT and the NAACP. She said Dodge assured her Green was treated no different than any player for similar insubordination, with race never entering the picture. Nothing George said to Green, Garcia was told, was of a racial nature.

Neither Green nor his parents could be reached for comment.

Navy a draw

Navy, which recently played at SMU, TCU and in a bowl game in Houston, has brought large crowds to Texas. On Monday, Navy sold out an allotted 1,200 tickets for its game at UNT on Nov. 10.

Ken Smith of the of the Navy Alumni Association said the North Texas chapter has sold nearly 1,700 tickets. Chapters in the Houston, Austin and San Antonio areas are also selling tickets.

Those sales continue through Saturday, and UNT could have a crowd in excess of 25,000 despite being 1-7. Smith said former Navy quarterback Roger Staubach could make an unscheduled appearance at Navy's tailgate party, but not as part of any official game festivities.

Briefly

UNT has an extra week to heal an ailing offensive line. Center Kelvin Drake (ankle), guard Tyler Bailey (concussion) and tackle Matt Menard (stomach flu) missed part or all of Saturday's game.

True freshman Sam Dibrell, who caught eight passes against Middle Tennessee, could start at outside receiver against Navy. Casey Fitzgerald's move from outside to inside receiver has sped Dibrell's development.

this article helps clear the situation up some. Green is showing some immaturity by not even going to the correct chain, when not even the school knows of the allegations until it pops up on the front page of the local newspaper.

Just comes off as a disgruntled player who does not take well to being disciplined for his own actions. Goes back to the complete lack of personal responsibility today. <_<

So what are the pluses of moving Fitz to the inside?

More production out of more routes, I'm assuming. Also, getting Casey matched up more with slower players, ie., safeties or small LBs who drop back. If Dibrell works at outside, you've added some quickness by having him and Casey both on the field, while getting more production inside. Stickler and Washington should be rotating, not both starting.

On the other issue, plain to see here that DG's claims are a crock. He won't even deal directly with the university. Maybe he doesn't trust anyone but the NAACP, but he's pretty much assured himself of no scholarship after the spring semester. What an idiot. The kid was given a second chance and a starting job, and he still blows it. In a few months, you'll be on a fast track to no college degree or as a walk-on at some directional school in the Lone Star Conference. Nice call, Brainiac!:D:P;)

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Dodge has a challenge and now contreversy. I think he'll measure up! Now that we've beaten this to a "lousy pulp" (my mom used to always use that phrase. I never knew what it meant, but I never wanted to be that "lousy pulp"), what do you guys think about stopping that Navy option?

Well, I saw them play earlier this year and they looked pretty good. They run the option to perfection. Should be a nice challenge for our defense. This game will definately come down to us playing great assignment football.

agree 100%. That's probably the name of the game for our guys. That, and not turning the ball over. It would also be nice to get some pressure from the front 4 to disrupt timing. I think that could help a lot without having to leave a guy alone in the secondary when we get hit with the occasional pass.

So which LB's do we have that are most suited to playing the option? I'm assuming Holman and Roberson on the outside but do you keep Mendoza in the middle?

I wish counter suits were filed that made crying wolf something that better be happening or the crier gets the crap sued out of them for defamation of character and whatever else can be bought in.

Well depending on what type of option they run. If it's the "midline option" then it is played more by the tackles and linebackers. If it's the triple or veer option then the defensive ends, outside linebackers, and safties will play a big role. The key is coming up with schemes to play the option a couple of different ways. If you play with the same assignment all the time then they will eat it up. What I mean is, sometimes put the end on the pitch and others put him on the qb. That's just an example, but those who know the option see what i'm getting at.

Eagle1855: GREAT Avatar. Hilarious.

After watching the Delarware game against Navy, that was nothing but a see-saw of scoring. Let's hope our offense is clicking. Yardage was lopsided, UD with a buttload of passing yardage and Navy with a buttload of rushing. I watched part of the game and seem to remember UD threw a lot of short routes and constantly got extra yardage after the play. Navy secondary looked small and UD was breaking tackles left and right. But I didn't pay that much attention. Maybe this game isn't so far out of reach. Especially since our D seems to be playing better. The offense has to protect the ball and not constantly put our opponent in such great field position.

Seriously, right?

I think this game will be close, judging from what I saw in Navy's last televised game. Yes, they are small, but they're very fast and that can kill our D. Then again, our offense is very fast as well...if the TOs are kept to a minimum and if Navy's punter won't kick the ball to the 1-yard line, we'll win.

Yeah, I said it...if MTSU's punter weren't so damn good, Saturday could've been different. MTSU needs to thank God or whomever for that kid.

I hate to say it again but Hair Roman was the best thing the punter from the MUTs had going last Saturday night!!

Why file a complaint and then not try to cooperate with the university? I would think by being difficult with the university might make it more difficult for them to see your side of the story.

It seems like as this story develops, it keeps getting more and more strange.
