UL Monroe (1-4) at North Texas (0-5) 7:00 EST GamePlan

Why to watch: North Texas might not be very good, but it sure is entertaining. The Todd Dodge, Mean Green offense is averaging 341 passing yards per game, but the defense is giving up yards and points just as fast on an ugly seven-game losing streak. UL Monroe lost its first four games before shocking Arkansas State 30-13 to get into the Sun Belt race. With a home game against Florida International ahead next week, the Warhawks can be 3-1 in Sun Belt play going into the road trip against Florida Atlantic.

Why UL Monroe might win: The North Texas defense isn't' doing anything right. Yeah, Oklahoma and Arkansas fattened up the statistics, but lightweights like SMU, Florida Atlantic and UL Lafayette have had a great time, too. The Mean Green is dead last in the nation allowing 547 yards and 51.6 points per game. There's no pressure coming from the defensive front, no big plays from the secondary, no takeaways. Nothing. It's ULM's turn at back.

Why North Texas might win: Beating North Texas requires an offense with a pulse, and while ULM can run, it's not a strong attack. More importantly, stopping the pass is a plus, and ULM has one of the nation's worst pass defenses despite playing few teams that bomb away. The Warhawks have dealt with efficient passers, but not any bombers. This week, they'll have to handle getting thrown on, and thrown on, and thrown on some more.

Who to watch: UNT's Giovanni Vizza isn't big, but he's extremely fast, mobile, and has a strong arm. With things going south, the coaching staff turned to Vizza to get him some work and some seasoning, and he threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns on 57 attempts, but he also threw three interceptions. He'll make a ton of mistakes and should throw a bunch of picks, but he'll also add positive yards running the ball.

What will happen: North Texas will throw for over 400 yards, UL Monroe will run for over 300 yards, and the team that gives away the most turnovers will lose. That'll be North Texas.

CFN Prediction: UL Monroe 48 ... North Texas 43 ... Line: UL Monroe -7

I know I'm the eternal optomist but I keep thinking the D will show up some time soon!! I mean, dang, they have had some practice against the good and bad offensive fronts. Don't you think they will figure out something. If they read this board they have to get a little fire from all the "dogging" that's done!

If our defense gets that pacemaker installed in time we should be set.

If a pacemaker equals a change in defense, then we are in trouble, because that has yet to happen in practice at least. But hey, they might change it tomorrow, just in time for saturday.

I like the name pacemaker....I may start using that.

well, we saw flashes of improvement last week (albeit against an injured ULL team). If Chapman and Thomas can start getting pressure, that'll help the DBs a lot. Of course that wont matter much this week. We just have to keep them from getting to the outside where we are out-matched with speed.. That's been our Achilles heel for giving up the big play.

I agree with the analysis- the least turnovers = win. I think Vizza comes out more confident, makes less mistakes giving us the surprise (wow) first win of the season, at home.

I hope this is the first win. I think we have a good shot at it for sure.

      Did he keep him because of lack of $$ to fire him last year? Or was he given another year to add players, make adjustments, etc to see if improvement? I don’t know, but guessing our budget factored into it.

      2025 DC Wish List

      Jeremiah Johnson from La Tech. My #1 choice no to high school DC, they have no clue to the portal and I don’t feel a great source of talent judgement. Carthel I don’t think would come for a coordinator role even for 200k more. He was my choice for HC after SL. if Johnson tells us no, look at the D2 level. D2 coordinators are more aggressive recruiting and better judges of talent. They are constantly trying to sell “snow to eskimos”. Bringing in particular kids from the portal with 1/2 schollys and inadequate facilities filling holes left by transfers etc. They are hustlers AND they won’t be afraid to come in with a hot seat coach, because of the confidence in their own skill . They will be more aggressive, But will adapt to the personnel they have in the cupboard. I’m also not sure we are getting any value from our recruiting gurus and support staff and we may need to revamp in that area for sure. Question our dfw high school coaches and get their recommendations for a DC We can do a little research in the D2 level and save money on a search committee lol
