Interesting Comments Last Night

I think it was during the LSU/Florida game that either Nessler or Griese state that they reason you don't see the 3-4 defense much in college is because of the running lanes it creates. The 3-4 requires three very talented D-Lineman to work correctly and speed at the LB position.

Also, during the Missouri whipping of Nebraska, the announcers were going on and on about how good Chase Daniels is, and one of them mentioned the excellent coaching he received from Todd Dodge.

Dodge has been here for 8 months, put together our best recruiting class in years in essentially 6 weeks, has implemented a pass based offense with players that were recruited for the running game, replaced 4 out of the 5 players on our OL, arrived to find only 3 WR's on scholarship, worked diligently to change the image DD had created and we have fans that think we should be 3-2 at this point in the season on our way to winning the SBC.

Please be realistic when looking at this season.

One of last night's TV commentators had a comment about TDodge's first recruiting class when he said "Coach Dodge & his staff only had 17 days to recruit his first class after North Texas hired him."

I suppose with all the designated official times (set by the NCAA) a coach and his staff can actually recruit narrowed Dodge and his staff's time to recruit than most of us could have ever dreamed. One has to wonder what Dodge & Staff will be able to do when they have a full year to recruit?

I completely disagree on the 3-4 comment, and they certainly were not referring to the same talent levels we are dealing with. In fact I thought it was a huge mistake of Bliel to change from the 4-3 to the 3-4 last year until I realized why he did it. Slow linebackers, but many of them with depth to burn and undersized DT's. He made the change and we improved, from 107th in '05 to 64th in '06. A genius move in my oppinion.

Then Mendoza comes in the following season(this year) and makes the change right back with nearly the exact same players and we have the WORST defense(statistically) in current memory at a solid 119th.

Horrible.

Great post Lifer. Everyone needs to calm down. I hate losing. It sucks seeing the offense put the defense in the hole with all the early turnovers. It sucks getting ripped with big running plays. However, I am excited that we are trying new things, installing a new offense and defense. Please tell me we can all give this staff more than five games to pass complete and absolute judgment.

Let Dodge have some time to recruit his guys, teach them his system (both offensively & defensively) and see what happens. It is silly to discuss firing any coach at this point.
