Coaches Regretting It?

As in most professions, coaches want to move up to the bigger paycheck, the bigger office, the bigger challenge. But there are at least three guys in new jobs who might be feeling a little buyer's remorse right now:

Todd Dodge (22), North Texas. Dodge helped create a national powerhouse at Southlake Carroll High School in the Dallas area. Now he's 0-3 with the Mean Green and last in the nation in scoring defense (51.3 points allowed).

Steve Kragthorpe (23), Louisville. Revived the program at Tulsa. Now being accused of tearing down the Cardinals.

Bobby Petrino (24), Atlanta Falcons. Winless in the NFL and coaching Joey Harrington, when he could still be drawing up touchdowns for Brian Brohm at Louisville.

And one coach who made a sideways move that has turned into a step down:

Tom O'Brien (25), North Carolina State. Wolfpack are winless against I-A competition. Meanwhile, O'Brien's old school, Boston College, is undefeated and ranked 12th in the nation.

I understand what the guy is saying, but if you dumb down the situation to it's most basic elements... every coach had to start off somewhere. Nobody just became a head football coach and immediately won the championship their first season, and I think that element can be spread accross the board. When Jimmy Johnson was hired from the NCAA ranks to coach the Cowboys, they were pathetically awful and they stayed that way for a couple years, but after building his team, they went out and won 2 straight Super Bowls.

Ease up on him we knew coming in there would be a learning curve for everyone and our D has definately improved as the season has progressed. Also facing 2 very good rushing attacks in a row will show if our D adapted from last week to this week.

Not any fans that understand rebuilding, they know four games is no time to start criticizing, that it is exceedingly premature until after the first full season and is somewhat premature until after the second full season. FAU did not walk all over us, Smu did, but two pissed off BCS teams Both looking to make a statement against us for the world to see was kind of expected.

Not trying to make excuses, but this stat needs a big * next to it. OU and AK both had serious statements to make when they played UNT. UNT probably wouldn't be last in the nation if they hadn't played OU and AK but instead played against more comparable OOC opponents such as LA Tech, Colorado State, Houston, etc...

There are no wrong moves in life and I respect someone who wants the challenge a heck of a lot more than someone who makes a move and has remorse. Repackage, redefine and make it work!

In yardage, maybe. But we have one of the worst rushing offenses, one of the worst scoring offenses, and one of the worst passing efficiency ratings in the country.

Writers do things like this every season....UNT fans that have followed this program for any length of time realize this is going to take some time.

I don't think of this as "knee-jerking" - all I think of it is a writer who needs a story. These stories run every year.
