(from Brett Vito's log):

North Texas guard Collin Mangrum will spend the upcoming season as a redshirt, head coach Johnny Jones said this morning.

Mangrum had off-season surgery on his knee and has never really been healthy during his time with the Mean Green. The sophomore was expected to compete for playing time on the wing, where UNT lost several key players to graduation, including Kendrick Davis, Calvin Watson and Rich Young. Michael Sturns also transferred out.

The loss of Mangrum could open up playing time for several newcomers, including SMU transfer Dez Willingham.

For more on Mangrum see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Not good for this year, but at least it gives the guy an extra year to develop to his full potential. If he can get healthy and work hard on his outside shot, he has a chance to be a major contributor down the road.

Well, I hate to lose him this season. But, if he redshirts.....and all of our freshman develop.....we would go into 2008-2009, with five sophomores:

Collin Mangrum

Tristan Thompson

Josh White

Kendrick Hogans

George Odufuwa

Those five could play a lot the following three years, and really grow as a team.
