Hutyra Scores Twice As The Mean Green Blank The Cajuns

DENTON, Tex. (9/30/07) – In work-man like fashion the North Texas women’s soccer team blanked Louisiana-Lafayette 4-0 from the North Texas Soccer Field. Playing shorthanded because of injuries didn’t slow the Mean Green (8-2, 2-0) down as they remain perfect on the year at home and improve to 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.

" I was very proud of the team today with three starters out for this game with injuries they showed a lot of character and were determined to find away to win this game against a very hard working team like Louisiana Lafayette,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.

Senior goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made eight saves to become the all-time saves leader at North Texas with 207. The shutout was her third of the season and the 15th of her career. Heather Hutyra had her first multi-goal game of the season with two.

Freshman Danielle Herron notched her first career goal and first goal of the game in the 26th minute of play. Her goal came off a loose ball in the box when freshman Janaye Woods found her behind the Cajuns defense.

Holding a 1-0 lead at the break, the Mean Green put the Cajuns (4-5-2, 0-1-1) away in the second half. First Hutyra made is 2-0 in the 57th minute of play with a goal off a cross from Brittany Cleveland. It was 3-0 ten minutes later when Veronica Ayala scored when she headed in a free kick from Kendall Juett.

Hutyra capped off the scoring in the 84th minute when she caught the Cajuns defense napping and slipped behind them off another pass from Cleveland.

North Texas outshot Louisiana-Lafayette 19-14.

North Texas is back in action on the road next week with a match Friday night at Florida International.

Are you aware that ULL tied Denver at Denver on Friday and Denver only beat ULM 1-0 today? Strange Denver beats Stanford but cannot put away ULL and apparently had trouble with ULM.

Denver is having trouble with the offense. Hemmings went down with knee early in pre-conf. Not so sure others may not be hurting too. They are generating opportunities (had 25 shots vs. 5 for LaLa and 21 to 7 vs monroe) but cannot seem to finish. By comparison, I think they had a timely strike vs.

Stanford, think that game they were outshot twenty something to 5 or 6, so......funny game. Denver does have a really good defense. They can make one goal standup if they get ahead.

I thought we came out fired up and played with a lot of energy early on Friday. Sunday was a little flatter in first half, but given the walking wounded we had, it was understandable. We could have put the game away real early, but missed on two high quality chances. Second half was all UNT. Patchwork defense was outstanding, showed the real depth this team has compared to last year. Starters Wicker, Hurst, and Lackore were all out with injuries Sunday, and Herron played on a bad foot. Juett played all weekend with bad case of shin splints, and Stewart was still out with bad knee from OU game. Those are just the ones I'm aware of..... we're pretty banged up, so all the more impressive for Sunday.

Thanks to the bell crew for the added spirit....wish we could fire the cannon too........

Those losses could be helpful in the long run.

The soccer team is great and deserves our support. Get out to a home game when ever your schedule allows...too bad they are often on Sunday's when the Cowboys are playing in the fall...I'll bet that keeps some folks away...but UNT Soccer is better than Dallas Cowboy football on TV! So, come on out...Friday and Sunday home games on the schedule!!!!

Agreed.......unless all of the injuries we took that weekend end up causing more losses......we have four players that have lost time injuries suffered in those two games... the experience itself could be very valuable, in fact we have made some adjustments already from lessons learned

Credit Hedlund for making the quick and accurate adjustments. It appears that the changes to the formation and strategy have reaped immediate results. Most of all, credit the ladies for being able to digest and implement these changes so fast and effectively. From what I've seen, the ladies have enjoyed many more "quality" chances to score. Already, you see shot distribution leveling out, more passing activity going forward and most importantly, the shots are coming from 6-18 yds as opposed to 18-30 yds. Very nice to see.

As I stated early on this season, the coach (Hedland vs Hooker) that gets his team to focus on "TEAM" play as opposed to individual stats should come out on top. It looks like Hedland has the edge today, but it is still a long season and injuries have not been kind to this team. Having said that, kudos to the ladies that stepped up to fill in so capably.

Without giving away too much about the changes (you never know who reads these boards), you need to come out to the games and see for yourselves. This team is very exciting to watch. The big beef about soccer is that it is so low scoring and not enough action. Well, with the #2 offense in the nation, that is not usually a problem with the ladies at UNT.

You must have to be a fan of the game of soccer to really think that it is better than watching the Cowboys, at least if you are a Cowboy's fan.
