The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights said it is investigating the University of North Texas and nearly four dozen other schools for engaging in “race-exclusionary practices in their graduate programs.” The department said Friday it believes the 45 universities are violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by being involved with a relatively small project that aims to promote racial diversity at business schools. The investigation is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to rid institutions of “diversity, equity and inclusion” programs.

While UNT's enrollment has experienced a slight dip in Fall 2024, with 46,309 students enrolled, a less than 1% decrease from Fall 2023, the university is still a significant educational and economic engine for the North Texas region.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Recent Enrollment:
The University of North Texas (UNT) saw a slight decrease in enrollment for the Fall 2024 semester, with 46,309 students enrolled, which is a less than 1% decrease from the Fall 2023 enrollment.
Economic Impact:
Despite the slight dip, UNT continues to be a major driver of economic growth for the North Texas region, with more than 46,000 students enrolled and nearly 13,000 degrees awarded in the 2023-2024 academic year.
Budgetary Challenges:
The enrollment dip, coupled with rising costs, has led UNT to implement budget cuts, including $8.5 million in cuts for the 2024-25 academic year.
No Program or Class Eliminations:
Despite the budget cuts, the university has not eliminated any classes or programs.
New President's Focus:
UNT's new president, Harrison Keller, is focusing on a new approach to budgeting and belt-tightening for the 2024-25 academic year.
National Trends:
While UNT experienced a slight enrollment dip, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center reports that first-year enrollment of undergraduate students at the nation's universities in fall 2024 is down 5% compared to last year.
