TT throws for 646 passing yards and loses. We throw 61 times tonight but nothing vertical. Any one can those stops and screens and have a a lot yards and a great completion percentage but what does that really mean? When we try to throw it vertical we get them intercepted or do not complete.

In the scheme of things, spread offenses are stat hogs and should be looked at from a different perspective. If you look at the top teams in in NCAA Div 1, you'll notice that they all have decent defenses and a running game. Do they all run pro style offenses with I -Forms & fullbacks? Absolutely not. But they do have an effective running game that they can lean back on. Just look at the difference in the spread and runningback recruits at Tech vs OU. OU's spread option & Tech's true spread use 2 diferent types of TB's.

OU's offense isn't quite spread, though. From what I've seen of this year at the first game and on TV, they do alot with fullbacks and they regularly have two tight end sets. In the Tulsa game Friday night, they had two different fullbacks and three tight ends going in and out of the game the whole time. Yes, they also will go one tailback and split four WRs out sometimes, but I'd say it's about even with everything else they do. Also, usually when they are in their four WR split, the fourth receiver is one of the tight ends split out in a slot. So, it's not like they're running four true receivers out there when they do their one back thing.

Tech is simply Mike Leach's passing laboratory - no fullbacks, no tight ends. Just winging the ball around 60-70 times a game. It really has done nothing special for them. They win 6 or 7 games a year, sometimes 8, same as when Spike Dykes was there with his good running backs.

No matter what offense any team runs, the key will always be the defense. If you can't stop the other team from scoring, it doesn't matter what offense you run. Tech gave the classic example last night. They light up the scoreboard...but still lose because their defense is awful - when they're not playing SMU. Tech will be obliterated many times this year in Big 12 play...as usual.

I absolutely agree with you.

I'm in the camp who believes in a good running game. One that can eat up clock, but more importantly, wear out opposing defenses. Now don't confuse me with one who loves the old school Cornhuskers or DD offensive mindset. The game has evolved too much since then to flat out "power" over your opponent.

As for OU, they do run a lot more Pro style stuff than they did in the past. I'm betting that has everything to do with the increase in quality recruits the last 5 years. When Stoops first arrived, OU almost exclusively ran the Spread Option. Hell, they won a national title with it. They key here though is that they do incorporate a running game.

My guess is that OU won that title in 2000 because Leach left. In 1999, they led Notre Dame in South Bend, but lost the lead in the second half, losing by four. They also jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead on Texas that year, only to lose the lead and game in the second half.

If Leach hadn't left for Tech, OU would have lost a couple in 2000. Mark Mangino took over as co-OC in 2000 with Chuck Long. They did a ton more pro-style stuff in 2000 than in 1999.

I'm like you. You can't be a pure running team anymore. But, you also can't be winging it 60-70 times per game. There has to be some sort of happy medium...mainly for the sake of the defense.
