Sun Belt Game of the Week

Florida Atlantic (2-1) at North Texas (0-2)

Why to Watch: Is it possible for two teams to crank out 1,000 yards of passing offense? After years of no Sun Belt passing production whatsoever, there are suddenly some high-octane options to make things extremely interesting. When last we saw North Texas, it was losing to SMU, but put up 601 yards and three touchdowns in the process. Last week, Florida Atlantic blew past Minnesota with Rusty Smith throwing for 463 yards and five touchdowns. Having already beaten Middle Tennessee, the Owls can be 2-0 in Sun Belt play and establish itself as one of the true favorites to go to the New Orleans Bowl. If nothing else, this will be very, very entertaining.

Why Florida Atlantic Might Win: Oh sure, the North Texas offense has suddenly found something it can build around with the passing game, the defense has been horrific. Getting the doors blown off by Oklahoma is one thing, but giving up 534 yards and 45 points to SMU is another. The Owls should be able to move the ball however it wants to, and Smith should be able to pick the number of passing yards he wants to put on the board. UNT generates no pressure to throw him off. FAU, currently second in the nation in turnover margin, helped by 13 takeaways will also win the turnover battle. The UNT defense doesn't force mistakes.

Why North Texas Might Win: It's not like the Florida Atlantic secondary is stopping anyone. Minnesota roared back to make last week interesting with 355 passing yards. Oklahoma State achieved a near-perfect offensive balance against the Owls, and came up with several big pass plays. The FAU secondary isn't getting any help from the pass rush, and as the games wear on, they're making more mistakes. North Texas might be more effective bombing away in the second half.

Who to Watch: Someone had to catch Daniel Meager's 601 passing yards against SMU. Senior Brandon Jackson finished second on the team last year with 17 catches for 188 yards and a touchdown. So far this year, he caught 17 passes for 217 yards and a score, but he's the number two target right now behind junior walk-on Casey Fitzgerald, who's taken the season by storm. He made seven grabs for 126 yards and a score against Oklahoma, and then tore up SMU for 18 catches for 327 yards and two scores.

What Will Happen: This will be fun. The rest Mean Green will put up a ton of yards with plenty of big plays, but the FAU defense will come up with just enough key stops, and the passing game will do just enough to keep up the pace.

I've got a sneaking suspicion our defense is going to live up to the Mean Green genesis.

Might as well get the predictions started it is Thursday after all. I am going to have to go with neither teams D shows up but UNT fans do to the tune of 26,324 to watch TD and the spread out shoot Howie. But the real story will be J-Mo coming back to rush for 150 yards and 2 TDs while Mosely has 75 yards and 1 TD. Meager will throw for around 450 yards and 4 TDs in a slow day but keep the mistakes to a minimum only throwing 1 INT. Final score UNT 55 FAU 52. The freshman kicker, Moreland, seals it with his 2nd field goal of the day this one from 40 yards out with less than a minute to go.

      We are going to Idaho!

      Way too early for bowl location speculation. Hell the playoff is still on the table for us if we run the table. And if all the higher ranked G5 lose more games than we do on the way to a AAC title we still might get in. Don't get me wrong I won't scoff at being bowl eligible but I want an AAC title game appearance to get excited about post season football. Far more people will watch that AAC title game than a random mid-week Bowl Game that may not have existed before rivals like UTSA joined FBS.

      Getting Close To Being Ranked (Army, Navy)

      I think the difference I have seen is the defense. When we went to Lubbock, this defense was in shambles. That's not to say they are world beaters or can hang with major programs, but I have to admit, they look different. I think the next 2 games will show a lot more.

      UNT ranked #7 in Texas!

      DCTF - Note: Teams are measured against the overall strength of their conference. 1. Texas Longhorns 5 - 0 Texas was idle in Week 6 ahead of the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma. The Longhorns should be the No. 1 ranked team in the country by Monday afternoon. 2. Texas A&M Aggies 5 - 1 Conner Weigman and Nic Scourton led the Aggies to a statement victory at home over Mizzou. Texas A&M is 3-0 in SEC play and on a 5-game winning streak. 3. SMU Mustangs 5 - 1 The Ponies are in ACC contention after consecutive wins over Florida State and Louisville. Kevin Jennings passed for over 200 yards and rushed for over 100 in Week 6. 4. Texas Tech Red Raiders 5 - 1 Tahj Brooks topped 100 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in a late-night victory at Arizona for an important road win. 5. Sam Houston Bearkats 5 - 1 Sam Houston thumped UTEP on the road to start its march towards a Conference USA title in Year 2 as an FBS program. K.C. Keeler deserves his flowers. 6. North Texas Mean Green 4 - 1 The Mean Green was idle in Week 6. They continue conference play this weekend on the road at FAU. 7. Texas State Bobcats 3 - 2 Texas State stopped a two-game losing streak with a rare road win at Troy. The Bobcats remain in Sun Belt Conference contention. 8. Houston Cougars 2 - 4 A road win over TCU propels the Coogs up the list despite a losing record. Zeon Chriss looked tremendous in his first start as Houston's quarterback. 9. TCU Horned Frogs 3 - 3 TCU has lost three of its last four games after the home defeat to Houston. Penalties and turnovers are dooming the Frogs. 10. Baylor Bears 2 - 4 Baylor is now 0-4 against Big 12 foes in 2024 even though the Week 2 defeat at Utah doesn't technically count as a conference loss. 11. UTSA Roadrunners 2 - 3 UTSA gets a chance to right the ship in Week 7 against Rice. The Roadrunners were idle on Saturday. 12. Rice Owls 1 - 4 The Owls had a much-needed weekend off to regroup following the Charlotte loss in Week 5. 13. UTEP Miners 0 - 5 Scotty Walden's group remains winless after five games of his tenure. The second half of the schedule is much easier than the first six games. #13
